Treatment Solution for Receding Hairline
Dr. Travis Stork: In this next one, it makes many women very self conscious. We’re talking about having a high forehead or receding hairline. Doctor Gal Aharonov is a plastic surgeon as well as a pioneer in the latest technique in basically forehead reduction surgery.
Dr. Gal Aharonov: Yeah exactly. Well, hair loss in women, it’s a very sensitive topic. Some women are either born with a big forehead or a high hairline. Some women, it’s a progressive issue, something that starts to develop for one of many reasons, either hormones, genetics or environmental factors.
Dr. Andrew Ordon: You know, it’s all about balance, right? And you have this pre-op photograph to show exactly that and obviously, this forehead is way out of proportion to the rest of her face. If we look at the relationships between the top of her brow and where this hairline starts, this thinning hair is not really your hairline. Her hairline is up in there.
So, what we want to do is remove all of that excess tissue because of this distance is way, way too long. What we’re doing is a forehead lift and reverse instead of wanting to lift this part up, we bring this part back and I’m going to show you exactly how that works.
So, let’s run through this video to give you an idea of what’s happening in this patient. Her hair is actually thinning over time. This hair follicle’s right in here, as we lose those, it’s giving the appearance that she’s going bald. So, we want to remove those areas where the skin has thinned.
Now, I want to show actually what is happening in the surgery. So, we’re going to take you through the surgery with an animation. What happens we make an incision similar to our forehead lift but as I said we’re loosening the tissue up and the back of the scalp and bringing that forward. We’re closing that like we do typically with a facelift. Something we do special here, we don’t make a straight incision typically, we try to bevel that incision in such a way that it hides it and it’s hidden in the hairline area.
Dr. Gal Aharonov: What will happen, those hairs will grow through the incision with time and will camouflage it to the point where it’s practically invisible.
Dr. Andrew Ordon: And finally, some before and after pictures. So, we have two patients that we can see clearly in both of these. Their foreheads look too large, particularly in this picture, you see that this dome, this part of her forehead, the round part of the forehead really conspicuous. We made these incisions to remove that excess scalp. You can see over time this is a longer term result. When it heals, you really don’t see the incision. It’s hidden. It is a beveled incision right in the hairline like so and again, another before and after picture from the front. You see the height of this forehead here is way out of proportion of the rest of her face where you look at the brows and the top of the hairline. That distance is too long. You see in the post picture that that’s been reduced creating much better balance on her face.
Dr. Travis Stork: So, there are options for women out there and for men as well.
Dr. Gal Aharonov: For men as well, it’s a little different. It’s more of a generalized issue and those guys are usually regeneralized hair loss and women with more generalized hair loss will probably benefit more from other procedures like hair grafting. There are new techniques like micropigmentation of the scalp to decrease that contrast between the hair and the scalp.
