What Are The Trends In Master Bedroom Design?
Hosted By Irwin Weiner, ASID & Nicola Chernicoff
Nicola: Welcome to Design 2 Share Q&A. I am Nicola.
Irwin: And I am Irwin. And today we are going to ask the question “What are the trends that we are seeing in master bedroom design?”
Nicola: People are getting excited about master suites these days. The trend has gone really from kind of beyond suite to, you know, the whole suite. Kind of like a hotel suite. So, you are finding, you know, people want the walk-in closets. Not just a walk-in closet, but now they want—his now walk-in closet. And the same thing with the bathroom. So, they want a completely, you know, hotel like suite.
Irwin: Right. We are actually getting more and more luxurious and one of the things of course is, you know his and her bathroom and now we seem starting to see his and her bedroom even. So, and what is happening is it is funny because as much as things are changing in these bigger houses people are building, we have this certain human scale and we feel comfortable in a certain space. So, what is happening is that we are creating our own little environment whether it is having, you know, your bedroom with everything adjacent that you need even having food and refrigerators and things like that in your bedroom. So, you really feel in a self-contained environment. You do not have to get dressed as it were to go downstairs. If you have your children there and you are sure they have friends, you do not want to walk around in your bed clothes or underwear.
Nicola: [Laughs]
Irwin: So, or around the house. So, the idea is that you feel comfortable being in a private place.
Nicola: And sitting rooms like you have just said where having a fireplace so, you know, it is really a very comfortable space. And we must not forget that really the main reason is very--it should be conducive to sleep so it should be a very serene and calm place. So, maybe stick with neutral colors. I would not say do not use some color. You know, some maybe throw pillows with a little bit of color but rarely keep that in mind that it should be very conducive to sleep and take out those computers and keep it a very relaxing space.
Irwin: Or it could be just really relating to your personality. I mean if you are someone who really loves Country French and that is your thing and Country French is very colorful world in, go ahead and do a Country French bedroom. There are no real rules anymore. And I think that it should be--I think the one that there should always be is a sense of comfort, a sense of luxury, a sense of escape almost; like a haven for one so. I think what I have also found is that some of my clients have always asked me--often asked me the question of what should I do first, especially if there is a limited budget, “Should I do the master bedroom or should I do the living room and dining room?” And I think that on the one hand that your public space is only there for your guest and invite people for them to see but on the other hand, after hard days work, you want to have a room that is actually nice and inviting. Also another point is that normally shared by two people in the house often. So, you know, you are on top of each other. You kind of need the space. It really needs to be quite well designed for two people.
Nicola: Yes, alright. And it is nice to have that little enclave space such as, you know; you have set up here with. You know nice little area for reading and also good storage and also be mindful of--you know if you are going to put a TV in the room, which actually I do say it is not such a great idea because again, it is not conducive to sleeping. But, you know, instead of having this huge TVs now, you know, you can just get a small, little flat screen.
Irwin: Yes, flat screen, it looks great because actually I did it for a client where I actually hid it behind doors in a secretary, like a desk secretary rather than having there sort of typical armor that you would walk into the room and think, “Oh! Well, guess what is in that armor.” Oh! It is a TV, I would never have guessed, you know. So, of course, having that TVs and pop up at the foot of the bed is one thing that is very good. Having electric beds is terrific. I must say I do love that and that—
Nicola: Yes. You can control that and the angle that you are watching TV.
Irwin: Right, right, absolutely. It makes it very, very comfortable. I think comfort is very much what it is about.
Nicola: Yes. One thing I want to mention also is the electrical outlets and things and the how the lighting is wired. Also pay attention to that because you know, you do not want to be walking to the other end of the room to switch of the lights at the end of the night. So, do pay a little bit of attention to that.
Irwin: Yes, and that kind of leads on to the remote control. When we have remote control, with a single remote control system like the Crestron for example, we can control almost everything.
Nicola: Right!
Irwin: The lights and sounds, the drapers; exactly. And you can even control that--on your way in your car. You can actually sort of punch it and when you walk-in, you know, the bath is running for you. So—
Nicola: Right, right, right. Including the lights, so, we are getting very lazy.
Irwin: Right, exactly. We are getting very lazy. So—
Nicola: But it is a luxury so—
Irwin: Yes. And note of course, we have spoken about, before, about wrinkle free sheets for example and other luxuries like it make it just bit a little bit extra.
Nicola: Yes.
Irwin: One tip that I do have I might say that I share with all my clients is that I do not generally let or recommend I should say, that pillow cases are not put in the dryer. We have oils from my face and my hair and that tends to sort of make a pillow case not last quite as long. So, the idea is take them up damp, get them air dry for a bit and then iron them. And it looks so terrific and it just does not take that to her. It would not look as is, pillow case that had been on the dryer for so long.
Nicola: Great tip for now on.
Irwin: There you go. So, in summary, just remember that the bedroom can be luxurious as you like. It is your place of refuge and make it just that.
Nicola: Keep it calm and peaceful.
Irwin: I am Irwin.
Nicola: And I am Nicola. Thank you for watching design 2 share Q&A.
