One thing you would definitely want to have down as a lead guitar player is Arpeggios and today we are going to start with basic Traid Arpeggios meaning three note chord arpeggios and to simplify the matters we are just play them on the top 3 strings 1, 2, & 3. I am going to give you a pattern for major, minor and diminished. And we are going to step through the diatonic chords of three different keys.
I am going to start with the 'D' chord for simplicity because I am down here at the end of the fret board and I am going to work my way up the 'D' major chord as I am showing you now this is opened shape. And the key of 'D' has 2 sharps in it 'D', 'E', 'F'# 'G', 'A', 'B', 'C'# and 'D' and so it has 'F'# and the 'C'# at 'A'.
What we are going to do is learn the diatonic Arpeggios in 'D' and again for convenience on the fret board here and we are going to work away back on the circle of 5th to the key of 'G' and the key of 'C' and look at the Arpeggios. What I really want to get across today is the concept to the shape. So, if I start with a major shape for 'D' on the top 3 strings, this shape here I am going 'A', 'F'#, 'D', 'A', 'D', 'F'#, 'A' and then that shape is going to be a major Arpeggios shape no matter where you put it on the fret board. In this case the 'D' is here on the 2nd string of the 3rd fret that's where the root is going to be always on the 2nd string for these shapes.
So, the 'D' major Arpeggios is 5, 2 on the 1st string, 3 on the 2nd string to 2 on the 3rd string and back. And again you can axe them in different ways, like that so, I am just doing the pull offs there 5, 2, 5, 2, 3, 2 like that so. Now, if I were apply that to the chords in the key of 'D' the basic chords in the key of 'D' are 'D', 'e' minor 'f'# minor 'G' major, 'A' major, 'B' minor, 'C'# diminished and back to 'D'. So, what I am going to do is work my way up the fret board and show you these Arpeggios. So here is the 'D' and again these are already in the tap in the beginning. So there is 'E' minor so with this one now what we have is the major shape that we had but here is with the 3rd wars of the chord from 'a' minor chord you got to move the 3rd back a fret, back a half step. So, for 'E' minor here is 'E' on the 5th fret on the 2nd string, I am going 7 to 3 on the 1st string, 5 on the 2nd string to 4 on the 3rd string and those notes are 'B', 'G', 'E', 'B'. And the notes of the 'E' minor for this 'E', 'G' and 'B'.
The next chord up is 'F'# minor 'F'# is here at the 7th fret of the 2nd string so; I am going to play the minor Arpeggios shape for that. So, so far 'D' major, 'E' minor, 'F'# minor to 'G' major. Now, notice when I get the 'G' at the 8th fret of the 2nd string, the 'G' chord in the key of 'D' is a major chord so I am using that major Arpeggios shape. 'A' major and again 'A' is here at the 10th fret so it is an 'A' major chord to 'B' minor here is 'B' at the 12th fret of the 2nd string and the next chord is 'C'# diminished. So for this one this will be a new shape I am going to be at the 15th fret of the 1st string to the 12th fret of the 1st string down to the 14th fret of the 2nd string of the 12th fret of the 3rd string now, that's your 'G', 'E', 'C'#, ' G'. So, you get that's the diminish shape back to 'D'. So, if I played the whole thing, 'D', 'E' minor, 'F'# minor, 'G', 'A', 'B' minor, 'C'# diminished to 'D'.
So, you want to get real familiar with these Arpeggios shapes, and of course that was the key of 'D' as I just mentioned. If we were to take that backwards on the circle 5th down to the key of 'G' lets look at how that would work in the key of 'G' the chords in the key of 'G' are 'G', 'A' minor, 'B' minor, 'C' major, 'D' major, 'E' minor, 'F'# diminishes and 'G' major. So, here is 'G' on the 2nd string again the rids for all these Arpeggios patterns in this lessons are on the 2nd strings. So, here is 'G' major to 'A' minor to 'B' minor to 'C' major down to 'D' major and there is no reason you couldn't keep going up the fret but I just went down to 'D' for continuous here out of the fret board. So, you get 'D' major to 'E' minor.
Now, in this case 'F'# diminish to 'G' and again that one is written out in the tabs as the key of 'G'. So, the key of 'C' to take it backwards again in the circle of 5th is going to go from 'C' major I have got open strings here so this is 'G', 'E', 'C', 'G' or 3 open , 1 open and the chords in the keys of 'C' are 'C', 'D' minor, 'E' minor, 'F' major, 'G' major, 'A' minor, 'B' diminished and 'C' so, here we go with the key of 'C', 'C' major to 'd' minor to 'e' minor, 'F' major, 'G' major, 'a' minor to 'B' diminished and back up to 'C'. And that is little bit about basic "Traid Arpeggios" on the strings 1, 2 & 3.
That starts with a hammer on from the 7th to the 9th fret on the 3rd string and then the 8th fret on the 2nd string. So, I really think of that as three different little sections that make that whole views. Starting of with the first section.
