Tritone Substitution and Passing Chords
PLAYGTR.NET
[Demonstration]
Okay so a quick lesson about two, five ones and try the substitution somebody has
requested a couple of losses about passing chords and try the distribution substitution so
let’s say what that is physically in a five one so G7 to 7M7 or 2, 5, 1, if it’s D-7, G7, C7.
I would substitute the 5 chord which in this case is a G7 with D#7 the chord sits on the
flat 5 so try them…
[Demonstration]
So G, D# so now a 251 instead being Dm, G7, C, or B. Dm, Db7, CM7 so Dm7, Db7, so
Dm7, Db7, CM7 the reason is that both G7 and Db7 share the 3rd and 7th in the G7, 7
staff and the 3rd is B leave around a Db the third is F and b7 is B so these are two not so
common these are two 7th chord. They both actually find G7b5 and Db7b7 are exactly the
same chord. So if I now play the two chords…
[Demonstration]
This is Dm9, G7, CM and Dm9, Bb9, CM so you’ll see how the chords definitely you
know can be substitute along with the other. This happens of course also for the signs so I
could use D-7.
[Demonstration]
Dm Dorian 1st chords or some kind of we got Dm9 in general than I could use a C, a G7
means I did or a Db probably the most common choice for a scale of D is the dominant
which is in this case Ab, Em in case D#7. Now the CM7 if you feel the course. So we
have seen in C on a 251 how you can substitute it to your things but of course you can
also use them of course together as well so I could play a 25 this is very common jazz to
play that’s 2, 5 in D which is Dm, G7 though I play it 2, 5 on that Db 7. I try it then so
could use Abm, Db7 so again Dm7, G7, Abm7, Db7 both going to CM7 so if you are
then to solo over it you can play Dm. So play on both 2, 5s.
[Demonstration]
So I played phrase Dm, D7 another phrase on Ab Db and then going to CM7 so of course
this is slightly for the slightly more advanced players until jazz but you could, you got
quite a lot of different options where there is with the substitutions. It’s very common and
again I got a few emails to see if I have some tips on this that’s it.
