Hi. I’m Bob Schmidt with Home Remodel Workshop. I own a lot of different types of tools, but every once in a while, something comes up, technology changes. And in the last 15 years, I’ve come to find that my digital camera, although it would be great for baseball games and football games, it’s also very useful in your remodeling project. I’ll show you how to use it.
After seeing many subcontractors take pictures of their work with camera phones for a future reference, I decided to go ahead and take my digital camera. And everything I have a wall opened up prior to putting it in insulation, I always make sure that I take a few pictures of reference points. If anyone has a question down the road being a homeowner or an electrician or a plumber, I can always go ahead and retrieve these from my computer and print them up and show them what’s going on. It has become a valuable tool to me. I can’t really say that I would do a job without doing it this way. Now before you start a job, everybody is real quick to say, “Well, we don’t know what’s in the walls and we’re not sure exactly how this or that is wrong.” Just after you finished your construction project, that’s the last thing you want to tell a homeowner which is, “Well, we’re not sure exactly how we did this or how this was run.” This is a real quick fix for that. I mean, if the problem arises two months from now and everyone has already forgotten about the job, you have that reference material to go back to. Let me show you some of the things that I make sure that I get in the picture and I’ll show it to you with the video camera with what we’re looking at here. And then, over here, how the cold air return came back down out of the ceiling, back to the vents. Also, the electrical wiring here obviously.
Another thing that I like to pay particular attention to is, right here is where most of the home runs are coming down to the electrical panel. I like to make sure that I get a picture of that so that everyone knows where they all are and they’re just plate protected. Another thing I like to pay particular attention is the bearing points for the headers. Here, we installed a couple of new headers. I just wanted to make sure that everyone knew where the bearing points were and how they worked. Here is another bearing point where three headers come together and they come down. And yes, I made sure that it was solid block all the way down to the I beam below.
So there you go. Go ahead and make sure you take plenty of pictures through every stage of your project whether it would be your project or whether you’re doing something for someone else. The homeowner may not be able to be there to see exactly what you did but may want to see it later on or may want to know what you did. The picture paints a thousand words and there you go.
