Audra Lowe: It is seems like almost everybody on some kind of a diet or another will would he
suddenly found out that some of the most basic low calorie, low fat foods like fruits and chicken
breast will actually making you fat. Well the new book The New American Diet author Stephen
Perrine reveals the truth about some of the obesity causing chemicals that actually live our so
called healthy food is here to tell us all about it. Good to have you here Stephen.
Stephen Perrine: Thanks for having me, I appreciate it.
Audra Lowe: Yeah the main thing is people think they’re eating healthier is getting confusing at
this point in time.
Stephen Perrine: You bet.
Audra Lowe: You could think that you’re eating healthier and find that foods that are supposed
to be better for you but there is chemicals in those foods right?
Stephen Perrine: Right, we’re not talking— we’re talking here about something called
Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals and the chemicals that are in certain foods that play with all
hormonal system and they can actually trigger weight gain by making our body’s create more fat
cells and then making the fat cells that we have better it storing fat.
Audra Lowe: So what we are going to do is talk about the old American diet versus the new
American diet, what’s in and then what’s out right? In terms of the breakfast over here that you
have here the old American diet said really eating a low fat kind of cereal these days?
Stephen Perrine: Well in soy remember a few years ago we all being told eat soy is good for
your heart.
Audra Lowe: Yeah.
Stephen Perrine: Well the American Heart Association is even back off that statement
nowadays.
Audra Lowe: Why?
Stephen Perrine: One of the reasons is that soy contents two chemicals that mimic the
hormone estrogen so when you are eating a lot of soy we’re basically getting a low level
estrogen therapy and nobody really wants that plus the a lot more soy then we think we do. It’s in
all sorts of food.
Audra Lowe: Right, right.
Stephen Perrine: So when you look at something like I guess cereal that promotes itself is
high in protein but that usually mean is high in soy but one bowl of this soy, cereal contains as
much soy protein as you will find in ten cups of soy milk.
Audra Lowe: Wow.
Stephen Perrine: And you’re getting, so you’re getting those dose of this kind of estrogen
mimicking chemicals.
Audra Lowe: Okay.
Stephen Perrine: It can lower your metabolism and make your body wants this to store fat.
Audra Lowe: Another thing is like the old American diet said the fruit salad is a great way to
diet to eat and obviously look at that fruit here they look good but it’s not so much what’s in the
food is what’s on the outside right?
Stephen Perrine: Well it’s the pesticides, the average Americans expose to between 10 and
13 different pesticides every single day. Many of those are obesity causing chemicals.
Audra Lowe: Okay so are we supposed to look for, you have fruits here that obviously you have
to eat the peel or you’re not going to be eating the outer.
Stephen Perrine: Right, whenever you are looking in the fruit like a grape fruit, pineapple,
bananas where you peeling there less receptacle to pesticides. When you are eating things like
apples, pears and strawberries which is permeable skins that’s when you want to look for
organic food whenever you can, organic is more expensive if you want to eat a lot of organic just
the certain fruits you want to be aware.
Audra Lowe: That’s the good point that you made, with the can tuna very quickly we think this
is the good option but it’s the can that it’s in that’s not good we should be going for the package
right?
Stephen Perrine: Right, the FDA recently came out for the warning about BPA which is a
chemical that’s found in the plastic lining of these cans. Again it mimics estrogen and it leads us
into the food especially when it is fatty or acidic food that’s found in a can. for tuna great option
just go with tuna and pouches.
Audra Lowe: Okay.
Stephen Perrine: Not lying with BPA and so you illuminate the risks altogether.
Audra Lowe: A lots of things to look for but at least now we know. Thank you so much
Stephen, good to have you here.
Stephen Perrine: Thank you I appreciate it.
Audra Lowe: It’s a pleasure, and if you guys want to find out other foods that might be making
you fat just pick up a copy of the new American diet which is available now.
