Tuning an Acoustic Guitar with an Electric Tuner

Hi, I’m Franklin Taggart. I’m a guitar player and a guitar teacher. Now, we’re going to be learning how to tune a guitar with an electronic tuner.

First step is to turn the tuner on. Push the little red button and the tuner is now on. As you can see, my speaking voice is already activating the tuner. We’re going to start with the first string and this is a note E and when I play the string, you’re going to see a little E flash up in the corner of the screen there [demonstration]. What we can see there is that the note itself is just a little bit flat [demonstration] because the needle and the red light are a little bit on the left hand side of the screen [demonstration]. So, I’m just going to tighten my string a little bit [demonstration]. Here we go. We’re in tune now with the E string for string E. Second string is B [demonstration]. And that’s running just a little bit sharp, so we’re going to just [demonstration] loosen the tuning peg a little bit [demonstration]. And now that’s in tune. Now, we’re going to play the third string which is a G note [demonstration] and that one is in tune. Well, it’s a little bit flat [demonstration]. That one is sharp [demonstration], so I’m going to pull it back down again [demonstration]. The next note, the fourth string is D. And we’re now going to tune the D string [demonstration] and that was in tune. The next string is A [demonstration]. It’s just a little bit sharp [demonstration]. And the last string, the sixth string is E [demonstration], just a touch of flat. I’m going to barely tighten that. And now our guitar should be in tune.

The next step that you need to take is to play a chord that uses all six strings like an Em or a G. In this case, we’re going to use an Em. First finger goes on the second fret of the fifth string. The second finger goes on the second fret of the fourth string and then you strum all six strings [demonstration] and that sounds like its in tune. That’s how you use an electronic tuner to tune an acoustic guitar.
