Once I have the half way line, now I know I have about us much I need so know I am going to pulverize it. Put it into the coffee grinder grind away. You have to go nuts on it, we are looking for a course grind, not necessarily an espresso grind. What we have done now is drastically increase our surface area. Into the drawer, you can see quite a bit below the line now and that exactly why we did this way okay.
Now we add denatured alcohol up to that fill line. Now, I know that stuff is not good to breathe but I know I can be the only person in the world who loves the smell of a denatured alcohol and I just have enough. Look at that okay it is the probably not the bad time to take a lunch break and bring this with you and just a every 5 or 10 minutes or so pick it up. Give a good shake and once you see that’s a completely clear not clear but completely consistent solution it is really nothing in suspension floating around that when ready to go and you got approximate 2 pound cut and then you did not to weigh anything so after 3 or 4 hours. Shellac look like its very well dissolve we can go ahead and poor into a secondary container.
“Shellac” because of the alcohol on it, dries really fast. If you have a problem applying it. there is nothing wrong with the diluting it more as just add more of the alcohol to the mixture and get in to the consistency that you have enough time to spread nice thin layer . What happens is the way you know you have a problem is as you start spreading it. You fill like hatch which means it is already starting solidify and it will gum up on you. It gets really messy so if that happen you may better off just leaving it along letting it dry and sanding it back or just grabbing some denature alcohol and wipe it off. You can clean all off that way but the cure full basically, to get some alcohol and dilute it down a little bit to give you a little more working time.
Two pound for this type of thing is about right might a little strong and if you are not Shellac you want to bring down to a 1 pound cut roughly. For this whole sample piece we should not have much of a problem. That beautiful orange amber kind a tone that is being imparted to the wood that is exactly want we want, perfect!
All right, here are all of our test boards; we have got boil wing seed oil with a code of Shellac on top. I got a our dye mixture with a code of Shellac and then we have the orange Shellac alone and here is a raw board that we going to put the water base finish right on top okay.
Poly acrylic, typical water base material, this is semi gloss. I am going to use this little foam applicators and I think if your not going to spray the water base material, this is probably the next best thing you can certainly use a nice brush, if you are good in brushing technique which I am not okay. Boiled lean seed oil your first. This applicator, nice, covers the whole thing in one shot. Apply to the dye.
