STS Twin Turbo Corvette
Part 1 of 2
Male Speaker: Okay, we’re here at STS Turbo, we’re going to go for a ride in one of their Twin Turbo Corvettes. What year Corvette is it?
Male Speaker: 2002 Z06.
Male Speaker: 2002 Z06 and you’re running Twin Turbo’s?
Male Speaker: Yeah it's got Twin GT32 Turbos on it, STS Turbo! And it's making about 7 pounds of boost right now. It's got a really mild tune up in it. Plenty of room to go for power and this car is probably making about 580 at the tire based off of fuel consumption right now.
Male Speaker: Wow, what’s Stock?
Male Speaker: Stock is 4 or 5 at the flywheel and generally a Z06 will see about 330 horsepower on the dyno corrected. You can see the car is drivable just like a regular stock van, it doesn’t act any different, just as a small manner and it is completely born stock car, accept for the turbo systems the car is completely Stock and some wheels and tires.
Male Speaker: Okay so, the transmission engine nothing else has been built?
Male Speaker: No everything is completely Stock and original. It still has the converters factory, can’t leave the converters on! All the good machines you put them.
Male Speaker: Tune ups! Fairly conservative too. I mean, 01.51 take another two or three degrees of timing. There is a bunch of power left in the timing without chasing the boost. Stock Corvette like this will tolerate either 8 or 9 pounds of boost with our system. And at that point I mean you had some guys make 6, 6.50 at the tire. Anywhere over about 9 or 10 pounds of boost, you want to put valve springs on it because the boost pressure will actually open the intake valve up under boost and you just don't pick up any more power as you turn the boost up. You may pick a little torque up still. One modification that the guys are looking at, really give out the 6.50 at the tire of range on a stock motor, just put a valve spring on it.
Male Speaker: They are pretty inexpensive and easy to do?
Male Speaker: But not necessary as we deliver the kit out of the box.
Male Speaker: This car has a little bit bigger exhaust housing on it, than a lot of times we have used. Its in there because we wanted the power more than top end on purpose. First and second gear. Is it super usable on a Z06 to begin with? We do pick up a little better traction because you get weight transfer now, because there’s more horsepower to lift the nose of the car. They transferred the weight to the rear tires.
Male Speaker: So lot of people don’t need some 03.05
Male Speaker: What’s the point in more power if this 03.06 now?
Male Speaker: Actually we can get a little better, let's get land over 03.11
Male speaker: Holy Crap! Wow, that’s incredible. What would say the difference is between one of the STS Twin Turbo kits versus going like Headers and all the other modifications that people usually look at, air intake, exhaust?
Male Speaker: The two big bonuses are number one is; doing heads on a cam and intake, and I have been working on cars and doing motor sports stuff for about 20 years and I have done plenty of a hidden cam packages. One thing is that, well you start looking at a hidden cam package and the labor, the labor exceeds putting a turbo kit on, especially rear mount 04.03 system essentially.
The other thing is that you don’t really get to gain at a heads cam and intake that you will out of a turbo system and a turbo system will maintain better drivability. You don’t need to have an 04.16 cam. And since you keep basically the Stock heads on the motor without package, you don’t have drivability issues and your mileage is pretty good.
The reason of it is that, with the Stock some of our heads you don’t loose any airspeed. Now in a fuel injected motor the airspeed is very, very important. Airspeed is what allows you to mix that fuel coming in with the air, and get a better burn. So when you got a big heads or porter heads or big bald heads, you do loose airspeed quality and that hurts drivability and it hurts mileage.
Male Speaker: Okay! Wow, Wow. You pushed it pretty hard that time! Wow, that’s incredible. That’s some serious power.
Male Speaker: Yeah.
Male Speaker: You can feel the tires burning. I’m sure the camera picked up the car moving around pretty good --
