Mike: Hi! I am Mike from Elmira. My wife and I are fortune enough to have twins. How do you explain that one twin will have allergies while the other doesn't?
Prianka Kapur: Mike, that's a very tricky situation because a lot of times, when we look at twin studies, generally twins tend to go with each other. So if one twin has something, the other twin is likely to develop the same problem.
However with allergies, it depends on what that twin is exposed to. For example, if you had one twin who likes to play outside in the sand box, is exposed to certain environmental allergens, they would have a predisposition to becoming allergic to those things versus another twin, who maybe likes to stay indoors, there are different allergens that can cause problems for that twin.
There is some genetic variation, but for the most part, twins tend to go hand in hand.
