Tyler's Treatment for Tourette Syndrome Follow Up
Dr. Travis Stork: Well, one year after under going a risky brain surgery and the
hopes of easing his tremors, Tyler is here today to share his story,
so everyone please give a warm welcome to Tyler.
Looking good!
Tyler: Thanks.
Dr. Travis Stork: How are you feeling?
Tyler: Good, pretty good. Yeah.
Dr. Travis Stork: So I have to tell you, there’s not a person on this audience who
hasn’t been moved by your story. I mean, absolutely moved by the
courage that you’ve shown. So it’s been about a year since you had
the surgery? And things better?
Tyler: Things are much better and I want to emphasize this procedure is
ground breaking, it’s life changing but it’s not a cure, it didn’t take
my condition away completely. It gave me a much higher quality
of life, I mean almost a complete flip, but I still have bad days, I
still have hard times and my tics still kick up a lot, but this
procedures made it so much more manageable, enjoyable and I
mean, I’m able to enjoy being with my family now and my friends
and the activities, it’s great.
Dr. Travis Stork: And so you have an electrode place inside your brain, you want to
show one of your scar too, don’t you?
Tyler: Sure. You kind to see in my hair, I mean, there’s more lumps but
the gaps in my hair is more --
Dr. Travis Stork: And then this is the device, right?
Tyler: Yes.
Dr. Travis Stork: And show to them where that is.
Tyler: That is right in my abdomen, kind of -- breaks the --
Dr. Travis Stork: And then the wire courses up.
Tyler: Yes, it comes up, right up in my front and then over to my
collarbone and then back around my ear, and then kind of straight
up to my head.
Dr. Travis Stork: So you’re talking about being better, but if you just think back we
have a home video and so I want you to watch this because Tyler
used to have trouble pouring a glass of milk.
So Tyler when you’re watching that now --
Dr. Jim Sears: He could hardly even watch it.
Tyler: I don’t -- I can’t watch it. It brings back to many horrible memories
and it takes my mind to a place that I don’t I like to be. I’m much
happier here in the present. I mean --
Dr. Travis Stork: We are happy for you.
Dr. Jim Sears: So actually I have a question for Dr. de Lotbiniere what do you
think of Tyler’s progress?
Dr. de Lotbiniere: Well, the last time we saw each other, hi Tyler, was when he left
the hospital, that was a year ago, and watching him now, it’s like
night and day. there’s no question. Which is not to say, as you
pointed out that it’s cured because it’s not cured, this is simply just
turning down those tics and turning down the urges that precede
the tic, but I think you would I agree the overall picture looks
dramatically better.
Tyler: I think I do.
Dr. Travis Stork: And you said you want to focus on the positive, tell us about an
exciting new development in your life.
Tyler: My wife and I just had a baby boy.
