Types of English Sentences
Hello welcome to Learning English with Jim. This shows that explores words, phrases,
and idioms that are common in the English language. I’m your host Jim. Well it has been
some time since I have produced a new episode of Learn English with Jim. I do apologize
for that. The work that I do at English Café has kept me pretty busy. Plus I was away for
some time celebrating the Holidays. Well welcome to a brand new year. This is the year
2010 and once the New Year comes a new lesson.
Today our lesson is 4 types of sentences, 4 types of sentences. Alright well we’re going
to talk today about 4 different types of sentences that you’ll find in the English language.
Those different sentences are declarative sentences, interrogative sentences, exclamatory
sentences and imperative sentences. Let me say that again the 4 different types of
sentences in the English language are declarative sentences, interrogative sentences,
exclamatory sentences and imperative sentences.
Let’s take a look at each type of sentences. Declarative sentences in the English language
are those sentences that form a statement example 1: The children are reading a book.
Example 2: She is reporting the news. Example 3: He is about to be tackled interrogative
sentences in the English language are those sentences that ask a question. Example 1:
What should I ware tonight? Example 2: Why is this homework so hard? Example 3: Are
you going to marry him?.
Imperative sentences in the English Language are those sentences that make a request or
a command. Example 1: Leave me alone. Example 2: Kiss me. Example 3: Do not tell
anyone my secret.
Exclamatory sentences are those sentences ending in English language that comes a
strong powerful emotion. Example 1: You need to get your act together and I mean now.
Example 2: Get up and give me 20 more pushups! Example 3: I am so upset I hate you!
Do you understand the difference between a declarative sentence and interrogative
sentence and imperative sentence and an exclamatory sentence? Hmm! Let me test you
just to see how much you really know about the 4 different types of sentences.
Tomorrow I will go to the store. This is an imperative sentence. True or false?
Give me some water. This is an imperative sentence true or false?
I love you so much! This is an interrogative sentence true or false?
Should I wear the brown shoes or the black shoes? This is a declarative sentence true or
false?
