UFO and Jews
Shalom! This video is about Jews and UFO extraterrestrial life number seeding in science class astrophysics in college and I was on a scientist this is of course for astrophysics for nonscientist. There were a lot of orthodox guys in the class and they are listening to the professor who talked about how we are one of a hundred billion stars in our galaxy and there are a hundred billion galaxies and the universe is expanding and you know there is a 20 billion light years long and I am thinking how this orthodox guys understanding this and hearing this.
In over the course of time when I went to a medical school, I remember my liturgy professor asked us if there are any courses that particularly influence us more than other courses and our decision is to go medical school and a quarter of the class said as a astronomy or astrophysics. So, the question is, is their anything in Jewish belief which says that we should believe in other worlds or other civilizations?
As prompted to talk about this today because of a report in the newspaper in May 14, 2008 the Catholic church high official said that there is nothing in Catholic belief that suggest that you should not and cannot believe that there is life in other planets and other civilization then, I agree one hundred percent. In fact there is a lot stories in the bible which seem to suggest about belief in life in other civilizations.
Ezekiel has the famous Merkavah Chariot, mysticism, visions of chariots from the sky that would seem to suggest kind of UFOs. Do we have the nephilim giants on the Genesis story and there is other places in the bible would seem to suggest that there might have been other civilizations around. In fact, the bible talks about angels and the heavens and the stars and there are factors classic sources in the Atomiden from naval rabbis that talk about life in other planets. For example, Priscus, the great medieval rabbi said of course there is life from other planet and Tom talks about eighteen thousand worlds.
This rabbi then almost said no and there is a debate the Contentions says that this other creatures in other planets have their own free will that I think is nonsense. I mean there is no reason to think that the earth is the only place in the universe of a hundred billion stars, in a hundred billion times, in a hundred billion galaxies that has life and why would not there be many civilizations with much more advance life. And, we are getting pretty good at space travel.
Just imagine if there is a civilization out there that has been around for a million years longer than we have. It is advance of course they can probably do space much better than we can. In any case so it does not say to be anything about in Jewish tradition which would say you should not believe in life after death. If God created this universe why would we think we are the only ones, now what does that have to do with a Torah for example is another question.
And, do other civilizations abide by the same kind of rules that we do but no, I do not think there is any reason you cannot believe existence of other civilizations. Shalom.
