Dr. Travis Stork: Earlier this week, Dr. Lisa said, one of the most important lifesaving tests of all, a mammogram.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Really, a mammogram to me is always difficult because in my family history I basically lost my mother to what I call the enemy, breast cancer. My mom was my best friend. She raised me as a single mother. The reason I’m a doctor is attributable to her.
My mom was really young when she found out she had breast cancer, not really young, but she was premenopausal, so I was involved in all of her diagnosis. I felt her warmth. I went to all of her doctors’ visits, when she got her mastectomy, even at the point where one of the radiologists couldn’t start an IV, I started an IV on my mom.
I also remember the doctor actually calling me and saying, look it's spread, your mom has less than a week. I went to the parking lot and just drive and unfortunately it only took about a week, and then watch, my mom died in hospital and able to have her say I love you before she died. I was the last person she talked to. So that’s something I carry with me.
I can’t tell you when the last time I had a mammogram or where my last mammogram was, which is so embarrassing, but we’re here at Tower Saint John's Imaging. I’m going to try and get through this because I know how important it is. And you’re going to do it with me.
Really, I’m happy that I did get it done and because it’s something I need to do for my health, but I will be anxious about the results which I know every woman is.
