I am an interior design student and am have a little difficulty in learning how to draft. My first drafting was a disaster. I didn't sleep all night doing an assignment. This video was helpful, but I needed something that was more instructional on drafting techniques. I want to chanllenge my self and perfecting my abilities is what I am interested in -thanks Anna Lake Mary Fla.

Understanding Asymmetry in Architecture

Hi, I’m Doug Patt and this is 50 Ways to Design like an Architect. Short video with tips about the architect does their jobs. This is part 2: Asymmetry. Asymmetry in architecture means the absence of symmetry that is corresponding parts do not exist at opposite sides of an axis. While our brains appear symmetrical, the functions of each hemisphere are different. In this way, it’s asymmetrical. Likewise architecture sometimes appears symmetrical but violates the rules. Furthermore, some buildings make no attempt to be symmetrical at all. Asymmetry is important because buildings don’t have to be symmetrical to be functional or beautiful. The golden rectangle described as divine in its proportion is a shape in which a spiral can be generated. That spiral is not symmetrical from left to right but it is sequentially ordered, that kind of order can be found in nature and its order that architects strive for within asymmetry. Order may not be found in how something appears but rather in how it functions. With this in mind, it’s the architect’s job to create spaces that function and buildings that do what their clients ask regardless of their symmetry or asymmetry. We’ll see you next time.
