Depakote (Divalproex Sodium)
Depakote is the brand name for Divalproex Sodium which is used to control seizures, migraines, and bipolar disorder and was approved by the FDA in 1984.

Divalproex Sodium is a prescription medication which is available only under the brand name Depakote. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as anticonvulsants. No one is exactly sure how Depakote works. But it is believed to come excitable over active neurons in the brain that can lead to a seizure or migraine. Depakote is used in the prevention of migraine headaches and is also prescribed to control absent seizures and partial seizures.
People who suffer from manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder may also benefit from Depakote. Depakote is available in tablets of a 125, 250, and 500 mg and in a sustained release tablet of 500 mg. A 125 mg capsule can be opened and sprinkled in food. Depakote should be taken exactly as prescribed. The sustained release tablets should always be swallowed whole as they are designed to release medication into the body over time.
The most commonly reported side effects of Depakote include fatigue, nausea, and weakening. But please ask your doctor for our complete list. Also tell your doctor immediately if you experienced easy bruising, abdominal pain, weakness, or any other significant changes.
Depakote should not be taken by people who have liver disease or are pregnant and should not be combined with alcohol. Ask your doctor for a full list of medications and conditions that should not be combined with Depakote. Depakote is a frequently prescribed anticonvulsant for controlling migraine headaches and epileptic seizures. However, this medication must always be used under the direct care of a physician.
