Norvasc is the brand name of amlodipine an antihypertension or high blood pressure medication approved by the FDA in 1992.
Amlodipine is a prescription medication which is available both as a generic drug and under the brand name Norvasc. This medication belongs to classic drugs called calcium channel blockers.
Amlodipine inhibits the movement of the mineral calcium into the muscle cells of the heart and arteries. Because calcium is needed for the heart to contract, this decreases the force of the heart’s pumping thereby lowering blood pressure.
Amlodipine is use to treat high blood pressure and it is also prescribed for patients with angina which is a painful constriction of the heart due to a lack of adequate blood supply.
Norvasc is available in 2.5, 5 or 10 mg tablets and should be taking once a day with a full glass of water. The most commonly reported side effects of amlodipine include dizziness, nausea, and swelling of the feet and ankles. So please ask your doctor for a complete a list.
