We are going to be working on piano chords or guitar chords, whatever that might be. What does it mean for something to be SUS 2, an add 9 or SUS 4? I am going to make a very quick tutorial on this for everyone and then we are going to chord barres. So here we have our major scale, DO, RE, MI. Let us start around C because it is easier. DO, RE, MI, FA, SO, LA, TI, DO. The C major scale we have C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. There is your C major scale. Let us give all these notes number. There is only seven notes in a piece of music and there you have it, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C this C right here is actually your eight note but it is really easy. Instead of putting A, you are just going to put one or instead of putting one, you are going to put eight.
So A is the same as one in a piece of music because this C is the same as this C. The only difference is that it is in our guitar. Let me show you guys exactly what I am talking about. If you go down here and go one, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C this C is the same as this C. It is just an occupier. So let us move this up and let us understand what. Let us do one at a time. Let us do the add 9. If I were to continue this C major scale C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C and then continue it over here at this D and then we continue further to put E, this C, notice how I just said that A is the same as saying one. That is because this C is an occupier, and this C, your eight, is saying the same one. But you can call it your eight if you want to. It does not really, it might be confusing but let us continue this roll and say this could be a nine right. If this C could either be eight or one then this D could either be nine or two, does everyone see that?
And if you do not let me know, there is always seven notes in music but if you were to go past that octave, you can say that D is the same as nine but really, it is a two. If you were to go up, it is a nine. So now, let us take this further and say if you are playing a C chord, let us play our C chord right here and instead of playing your C chord, let us play a C add 9 chord. So the way it works is that our C add 9 is that our C chord consists of three notes. We did this the other day C, E, G so let us take this and instead of saying C, E, G let us say it is going to be a C, E, G and then let us add a D. So it is now a C with an added nine in it. So our C add 9, this was our C chord, this is our C add 9. I am adding the D right there, see that? So here is your C, here is your C add 9. Now, let us take this further and think that if we add 9, let us do a C sus 2 – this might be a little dense for people but just hang tight just by sitting in the classroom you will get it. So your C chord is C, E, G but now, I want this instead of you playing a C major chord. I want it to be a C add two. All right, we just did C add 9 and it will be added to nine.
If I want to add a C SUS 2, it is the same as saying nine. But now, in the sound chord, this is where you guys need to really pay attention. This chord takes the place of your third. It says note to the third so in your C major chord where you had this, in your C major chord where your notes were C, E, and G, your C SUS 2 chords is going to be C, D and G. So there is no third. Let us play that on piano. Here is your C major right here C, E, G and now let us play a C SUS 2. C, D, G. See that D right there instead of an E, I am playing the D. Now what is C SUS 4, it is the same as an SUS 2. It takes a place on the third but instead of a two which is D it is the fourth, so here is your C SUS 4, so this is C, F, G is my C and my C, B, G and then my C SUS 2, so here we go.
