VBS crosses the border into Karnataka into the heartlands of the ancient Devadasi tradition to uncover the mystery of the Goddess Yellamma, and find out how a religious icon became a justification for child prostitution. We meet two teenage Devadasis, Mala and Belavva, to talk sex, saris, and how they cope with the deadly threat of HIV. We also get to see a Devadasi dedication ceramony and talk to an older generation of Devadasis.

When I heard about this I was shocked and confused, even for a man. It's amazing to hear such practice from such a time. What I believe from various sources that I've read is there is more than one type of devadasi's there is this type of devadasis who are supposedly daughters of the fertility goddess Yellamma who really then becomes sex slaves to wealthy men. And then you have Devadasis who were high class citizens before the British and Muslim invasion throughout ancient India. These kind of devadasis were actual temple dancers who literally danced in front of the deity in ancient India. Ancient temple dances such as Bharatanatyam, odissi, mohiniattam were a few of the ancient dances that were commomly practice throughout south india.
