Hello! My name is Adrian Richards, and today I'm going to be talking a little bit about Upper Blepharoplasty. A blepharoplasty is basically any operation on the eyelids. Upper blepharoplasty is an operation on the upper eyelid, a lower blepharoplasty is an operation on the lower eyelid. But I'm going to be talking today about upper blepharoplasty.
Okay, so an upper blepharoplasty is a procedure in which a strip of skin and small amount of underlying muscle and possibly some of the fat pads are removed. So who is suitable for this procedure? Well, basically anyone with this fold of skin. You could be born with this fold of skin. Often, it does run in the family and maybe and mainly your mother or father or siblings have a similar appearance and this can appear quite young in life.
More commonly, it develops slowly throughout life and the fold on the upper eyelid just becomes slightly heavier with time. Often, people don't realize that it's beginning to obstruct their superior vision. So if you mapped out their vision and what they can see, actually, it is being cut down superiorly, almost like wearing a cap, a baseball cap with a rim and often after operations people will remark that they can see much better.
So if you have got this excess fold of skin, it is quite a difficult fault that people don't realize it, but it is quite debilitating and often patients say that particularly at the end of the day they find it more difficult, because what you tend to do is, because the fold of the skin is obstructing vision, you tend to actually hold your eyebrows up, so you contract the muscle of your forehead causing lines across here, which can give you a bit of a headache. Towards the end of the day, even if you have been driving, this muscle gets a bit more tired and the brow comes down and the eyelids become a little bit heavier.
So these are the problems you can get from the excess fold of skin. Another one is that patients tell me that it is difficult to put makeup on and have to hold their eyebrows up to put makeup on. Then you don't really see the upper eyelid with the makeup because you can't see the upper eye because of the heavy fold.
What could be done about this? Well, I always say that if you're going to have one cosmetic procedure, the upper blepharoplasty would probably be the one, because it's relatively subtle, it's relatively simple with very low complication rate and it makes your eyes look sort of brighter immediately and it has got a quick recovery period.
Often, my patients, people who don't know particularly what they've have had done, they realize they look better, their eyes look brighter but they find it difficult to pinpoint exactly what has been done, because the scaring is normally hidden within the fold of the upper eyelid, so very well-concealed.
Upper blepharoplasty is a very good operation. It's relatively simple. You need to really assess whether you have got that heavy upper eyelid fold, whether it's your eyebrow that's low, in which case you may benefit more from a brow lift. So in a different video, I'm going to be talking about the actual techniques of upper blepharoplasty.
