Hey Vogzoly Conner here, only at guvner.com. Today I’m going to show you how to create a slightly more user friendly Linux environment. By messing around with certain files called Basher c, and we’re going to perform a few system updates as well just to get our Linux server sort of up to date the operating system and all that. This is part seven of the 20 part series setup and I manage the VPS. For newbie the VPS bible you can check out the index in my site. There is a whole bunch of stuff from zero to hero, your VPS. And its very vital, this is really a bit of a, you know a hand holding video, you know, just o give you an idea of how it is to really do this kind of stuff and give you a bit of an idea. But really you’ve got to follow the actual tutorial at my blog, because it gives you a step by step guide as to what to do.
Ok we’re going to first of all log in to command line interface, and we are going to open up a file called Basher c, and what we do with this, we can set up some shortcuts known as aliases and some special functions as well. And so we’re going to open that up and have a look at that. And so basically it’s a whole bunch of rules and if we scroll to the end of it, I’m going to give you an example as to the sort of the power of this thing. What I’ve done here is that I’ve added three lines, for this example I’m going to show you how you’re going to open this file, that little bit more early than typing in a whole long command. And so for example what we did to get into this file, was we typed in nano for the editor and then all of this business here to get into the actual file itself; would be lot easier if for example, you only had to type in, EVRC, though what we need to do is to save that, ctrl + x, y for yah, and then we need to reboot this file to activate our new command. And so we do that by basically typing that which is rebooted it. And now I will put in EVRC and there we go; now we’re in. Ok, so the aliases work, they’re very handy pretty cool actually. To paste something, you right click on your mouse and so I’m going to paste a whole bunch of new aliases and a single function.
So I take you through what these are. Another alias here, so I can update the software source index because the way Linux works little bit different to windows, is that you’ve got a bunch of central repositories of software, where you call software from. And so that your system knows exactly what the latest software are or the latest version, you need to update your index. And so, I’ve just considered having to type in every time. pseudo aptitude update which is what you would normally have to type, I’m just now going to be able to type in update, which is absolutely going to make my life a bit easier.
Obuntu version details, if I want to find out what version I’m using, I can upgrade my operating system just by typing an upgrade and since it doesn’t need me to type all that long. I just put an upgrade, full upgrade; I now just put F-upgrade for full upgrade instead of that entire long. And so when I have software I want to install, all I have to do now is just type install, rather than pseudo aptitude install, followed by the name of the software, for removing software, consider not typing not that long, I just type in remove. If I want to find out what my ram is, this is quite handy actually because, with ram, when you check out your ram normally it tells you in bytes, how much ram you’ve got left in every have a swap in all that, I mean this numbers are just enormous. It’s much easier if you had it all listed in megabytes. And so that’s the command that you would normally use to tell you how much free ram you’ve got in megabytes, I just want to be able to type in free. If you want a list, find out the detail or the current directory that you’re in which is very useful when you are going around Linux, normally you would have to type in that and so now I just have to type in LL. And if I want to reload now, haven’t installed engines, this super sexy web server much better that any other web server, the vast majority sites out there, normally you’d have to type in all of that lot there, to reboot it. And so I’m pre-emptying the installation of engines by putting in an alias instead of when I do install it, I only have to type N to off, to reboot engines web server. And then I put in a function here to this command line interface, it’s a little bit blank it’s out a little bit of color, formatting as well. So I’m going to save that and then I’m going to reboot it again and then when I dot that you can see a little bit of color.
What we’re going to do next is we’re going to set up our system locale. So it’s asking for a password. If for example you are living in the UK, instead of having ENUS you need to change that to ENGB. Stuffs like that ok?
And so we’re going to create a few upgrades, updates. The first thing that we have to do, if you remember that basher c file, one of the aliases that we’ve created was to update your software repository and so that you can be sure that you’re getting the latest versions of what software that you want. We have updated our repositories now, we can upgrade our systems. Thus upgrade would do. I just need to type in a Y for yes; it’s going to take a little while to do that. So you can see what happens when this is no the way, until it tells you what it’s doing. It’s telling me that he following packages will be upgraded and the whole bunch of different stuffs there and there at the libraries, software’s and other software’s will be dependent upon for example, and it’s upgrading the Ubuntu system with the latest patches for this particular version which in this case is Hardy Harron, which you may recall. And it actually tells me that it took three minutes to do that, it’s now unpacking it and setting it up.
Ok so there you go. That’s kind of like the equivalent of windows update if you like, except a lot quicker. So anyway that’s your update for the software repositories and the upgrade, and now what we’re going to do is we’re going to go for full upgrade. And there you go that’s it, there was nothing really to upgrade there.
Ok great, that’s the housekeeping done, we’ve got a secure box with user friendly access and functions and fully updated. In the next part we are going to be adding PHP, Mightycool, plus a few bits. And the next part after that will be adding a web server engines and our first test sites. And then multi sites and blogs and some special would press cashing configuration. And how to install that and other platforms, accounting management systems, what have you using sub versions for easy installs and updates and whatever else. You can check out the whole index as I said earlier in my blog, there’s a big old index here strapped under the bottom of each of these tutorials and all the rest of it.
