Using Your Skills to Help Your Autistic Child
Hi, welcome back to power over autism video blogs with Meredith and with this little video blog bits there’s a different topic everyday and today’s topic is if it doesn’t exist, create it. So a lot of times especially when we’re new to autism, it's very difficult when there’s something that we need or there’s something that our child needs and it doesn’t exist and we can’t find it anywhere. What are we supposed to do?
Well my lesson today is if it doesn’t exist create it and I have a little story to tell you just from this past school year, right now it's May 2010 and just in this past school year our daughter had tried every kind of dance imaginable. So we’re talking jazz dance, ballet dance, modern, tap, any kind of dance and as you all know we all have children with disabilities. If our children are put into classrooms that they don’t take their special needs into account at all, sometimes it's really difficult for them to either keep up or understand the instructions or whatever the case might be, they might get bored. So she was not really able to find a good knit where she really wanted to go back and yet she still kept saying she wanted to dance and I realized as most of you probably know. I’m a certified and registered as a yoga and palliates teacher and so I know a lot about teaching classes and biology and I was thinking to myself, there’s got to be a way I can use this ability in the skill that I have to help her.
And I know the owner of a local dance studio and asked just to meet for coffee with her which we did and told her about my dilemma and she went through her books later on and found a time when there was an hour in her schedule each week when one of the studios was open. And she offered that time to me and to us and put it on her schedule and so I typed up a description of a class that I wanted to teach which was creative kids groove and together she and I worked together a plan and you know to just bring into a nutshell. I started offering this class there to all children who couldn’t find a class where they could find a good fit elsewhere and so there was no class. Nothing existed and yet we created something out of nothing and my daughter absolutely loves dancing. She just have a blast, she just goes in there, she’s allowed to wear any kind of leotard, it's a creative dance class, it's my rules, I make them wear any basically any sort of dance wear they would like so it doesn’t have to be anything.
So you can do whatever you want to do with the skills that you have and if doesn’t exist create it and other examples of this might be coop baby sitting. You could start that or a parent support group for parents in your area, otherwise you may have some other skill that you have an ability that you have that you know could be valuable to your child or to other children. So if it does not exist, if you could not find it there are always going to be ways for you to create it and make it successful and make everybody who is involved feel good.
