Using a Highlighter in Textbooks

Host: What is the correct way to use a highlighter with a textbook? Amanda Medders: Often times I see students that will take a paragraph and highlight the entire thing. This is not helpful. The point of highlighting is to be able to quickly return to something that you’ve read and jog your memory, know what the paragraphs was about and get the main idea. Because of that, you want to really zone in on what are the keywords that are going to help you. You don’t want to highlight extraneous words such as articles, the A. You may not want to include full definitions; just the keywords in there that are going to help you call back to memory what you’ve read.
