VV Brown Talks about Fashion
Mina: Our flair for fashion and trademark vintage style have made the singer, songwriter a natural fit in the world of fashion. Hi, I’m Mina and welcome to WatchMojo.com. Today, we’re speaking with VV Brown.
First of all, let’s talk about how you ended up on the Catwalk in the pages of Vogue Magazine?
VV Brown: It’s quite a cool story actually. I was on my way to New York to see my boyfriend at that time who was a model and he was walking in fashion week. And the lady that was sitting next to me was actually Head Booker next models. And then she was reading Vogue Magazine, the British Vogue and there was a big picture of me in the magazine for one of the musicians to watch for 2009 in Britain. And so she said it was fake, that we’d met and we’d sat next to each other and then I was signed to next models.
I’m really interested in the next side about doing more editorial stuff where it’s not about fashion. It’s more about photography and about capturing a moment and then an emotion in a picture where I’ve been trying to sound close.
Mina: Who are some of your fashion icons?
VV Brown: My fashions are Dorothy Dandridge. She’s beautiful and her fashion sense was so feminine and graceful. I love the 50s because women were women and men were men. And then Grace Jones is another person. I love her fashion sense and she’s another black woman who is pushing boundaries. You know I love Vivienne Westwood. It doesn’t matter how much she ages. She always maintains a punk mentality and she always looks fabulous. I like the fact that she’s representing a punk street culture in a very kind of cultural way.
Mina: Tell us how you see the connection between music and fashion?
VV Brown: I think when you’re the kind of ace where you’re writing and creating your own music you generally have the high sense of style because you know who you are, your identity is strong, it’s all coming from one place and that is you the individual.
Mina: What would you see or some other things you look for when shopping for clothes? And what’s the best thing you ever bought at a thrift shop?
VV Brown: It depends because when I’m on the street hanging out with friends or whatever I tend to have a more geek chic look. Well, I like things bit buggier and scruffy in my hair so usually scruffy I usually wear glasses. But when I’m on stage it’s maybe a little bit sassy accomplice or something, a bit more extravagant. People can escape into my outfits and it’s like in other world and it’s a challenge for me to play on my alter ego of being VV the space Amazon warrior woman.
I think the best thing I’ve ever bought was this black dress and it has like a superhero cape and sometimes when I’m in London I wear it with my pad and it flakes out. That was cool.
