Hey guys, Chris from ClassicVWbugs.com, and I got another tip for you today, and that is tire pressure on your old Volkswagens. I've got a lot of questions about what kind of tires to put on your cars?
I personally don't like the Bias-Ply Tires. I feel that tire is just does not stand on the road as well as a radial tire, you can get the 165 or 15 tires which is pre-standard for a Volkswagen, which I like to put on. They equip the road very well and I find the handling is good. But some people ask me about tire pressure, and if you look in the old Volkswagen manuals that came with the cars when you bought it from the dealerships, they will tell you the tire pressure for the front tires are about 17 pounds and in the rear tires they are about maybe 23, that tops 25 pounds.
These tires when you get these brand new, they will tell you 32 pounds of pressure, 35 pounds of pressure, but that means max load, and they are also talking about factoring in cars that maybe weigh 3,000 to 4,000 pounds or maybe more or maybe less, okay, give-and-take.
You got to remember Volkswagens weigh under 2,000 pounds, and I found that if you blow the tire up a lot, I feel my car swing a little more, and I felt the back tires sometimes even bouncing when you hit a bump. In the car -- car rise hard. So if you want the tires to wear correctly for Volkswagen, I would definitely suggest listening to the manual, and if you want to go little bit more, I maybe go 20 pounds of pressure in the front, 25 in the back just to kind of bounce it a little bit better, but I mean it's amazing, I know it sounds low, but that's what Volkswagen are meant to have in their tires.
