Brittany Paxman: Hi I’m Brittany Paxman and I’m here with Darby Tober, who’s a Natural Search Consultant here at Apogee Search. She’s going to talk to us a little bit today about video optimization and a few tips on how to really optimize your videos for the web. So Darby, why do we start by having you tell us a little bit about video optimization; what is it exactly?
Darby Tober: Sure. Video Optimization is just making sure that your online videos can be found in the search engines and through some of the common video sharing sites. And we also try to really help those videos come up when people search for either relevant keywords or company brand names on those sites and in the search engines.
Brittany Paxman: Okay that seems really valuable. Can you explain sort of what makes these videos so ideal for businesses?
Darby Tober: Well they are actually a lot of people watching online videos right now. It has really become a growing trend so chances are that a business is audience is out there downloading and watching these videos and they really tend to get people a little more engaged than just straight text content. People really enjoy watching videos and get a little more involved. And they also capture the audience’s attention. They let businesses get a little creative and really start to build kind of a brand name and some brand awareness.
Brittany Paxman: Okay. So are there specific industries or businesses that will benefit in work from video than others?
Darby Tober: Well business is targeting consumers. Tend to benefit a little bit more because most people watching videos are just watching those videos for pleasure and maybe doing some shopping online for themselves not for their business but we found that B2B or business to business organizations can also benefit by using some informational videos. Those really help to showcase the business’s expertise in their industry and they can help to get the attention of other people in the industry and start to again build that brand awareness.
Brittany Paxman: Okay. So what are the goals generally of Video Optimization? Why do we want to do this?
Darby Tober: The main one kind of, as we’ve talked about a little bit is brand awareness. Just getting your name out there, getting people to recognize your brand and also generating traffic. These video sharing sites do get a lot of traffic so by branding your videos by showcasing your URL; you can actually get people to go from those videos to your website.
Brittany Paxman: Okay. So are there any tips you can share with us today on, you know, things that are viewers back home can really start doing to optimize their videos?
Darby Tober: Sure. The main one is whether you’re doing these videos for a video sharing site or whether you’re going to post them on your site to really add some branding to them. Maybe a short screen at the beginning or end of the video that has your logo and URL or maybe a watermark throughout the video with your brand name, just some things so the people know where the video came from and they have a URL to go to after they’ve watched the video. This is really important on those video sharing sites where people aren’t already on your domain so they really are being sent to your website when they finish.
Also just using keywords when you’re adding the video’s title, description and tags on those video sharing sites, that way when people search for keywords related to the video or your industry, your video comes up in the results and if you’re using these videos on pages of your website, remember you use those keywords on the page itself within the content and also within the title of the other tags on the page to the videos hosted on.
And finally kind of in the same being there, making sure that videos on your website have HTML content around them. Lots of search engines have some of ability to read these videos but not a great ability so to be on the same site, the best idea is to put some content around the videos that describes the video and uses keywords similar to what’s in the video. That way the search engines know what the video is about and they can help to rank your website for those keywords.
Brittany Paxman: Well those are really great tips. So is there any where that we can go to learn more about video optimization?
Darby Tober: Sure. Our website apogee-search.com has more tips about video optimization. Our blog also we host about video optimization sometimes so we generally have more information about it there.
