The reasons for this are manifold, and lie essentially in its religious, political and artistic importance. Let's first consider the religious aspect. This church is a major pilgrimage sites, since the relics of Saint Mark, one of the four New Testament Evangelists lie here. It is however the Basilica's political significance which takes Presidents here. As the city state of Venice sort to ensure that it's' name became inextricably linked to Saint Mark. And it succeeded admirably. He became the Patron Saint of Venice, and his symbol of a Winged Lion was adopted as the city's emblem.
This rich association gave Venice a sacred foundation on which it successfully based its commercial and military power. On that premise, we can even go so far as to say that Saint Mark's Basilica is the very symbol of the Venetian Empire itself. The accumulated wealth of the church was the very incarnation of the Maritime and Commercial strings of the Republic of Venice, or the Serenissima as it was often known.
It is hardly surprising then that this church became one of the most illustrious examples of the art world. It embodies a unique wealth and beauty of an Eastern church built in the western world. This then is the third and eminently significant reason for the renown of Saint Mark's Basilica. Together we'll look at the exterior of the Basilica.
Let's now come back to the church's facade. It's a wonder to be hold at anytime of day. At the end of the morning, the low angled light plays on the glittering colored mosaics. So here we are by the bell tower of Saint Mark's square, and facing the central doorway of the Basilica's main facade.
