You would not consider copying video with using a view finder. So why would you consider capturing audio without using headphones. I am Jennifer O’Rourke and today’s Tips and Tricks will tell you the best headphones to get and how best to use them for your video and audio project.

While considering your purchase for headphones, there are three different types of ear pieces to research. There are circum-aural, supra-aural, and in-the-ear buds. So most audio professionals prefer the circum-aural headphones that usually are large thick patted cushions that completely surround your ears. This are good if you are the solo shooter and you do not have, have any contact with noise on the outside there are going to mask your noise the best. Supra head phones are typically more light weight and use them with portable CD or MP3 players. Their ear pads are made of replaceable cloth or foam if they have some and it will deteriorate over time. They are usually very cheap. Many people prefer the sound of the supra-aural head phones due to their open and transparent nature.
Sound will come from the outside which is good if you are working with the crew and you need to hear what is going on around you. In-the-ear headphones or ear buds are not ideal for video production but they do offer an inexpensive and compact option for audio monitoring. They are infinitely better than no monitoring at all. The trade of here is sound quality. With few exceptions ear buds offer comparatively poor sound quality, lacking deep base and high clear frequencies that they are better than nothing.
Other professionals tend to use higher end headphones that usually have a quarter inch phone jack. Most head phones that you get and consumers store though have an eight inch phone jack. If you have a quarter inch and you are using a mixer, you have a space right forth but if you are using eight inch to have to sue an adaptor. The problem with using an adaptor is you could have some concerns with reliability issues. When using a field mixer your instinct maybe to plug the headphones into the mixer itself but do not. You really should plug in to the camera because you want to listen to that very last sound that is going out the tape.
Now let us talk with some of the reasons that you would use headphones. A simple one is just to know what the sound is that is going out in to your microphone you might not hear it airplane going over head or the distant hum of a land mower but you will hear them in to your headphones. A second reason to use headphones is just for monitoring mic placement you might need to bring a microphone up or down lower on your talent you can not see that when you are using the meters and if your talents moves your head they maybe be talking in to the mic the audio will change you will not see also in the meters but you will hear it in the headphones. Another reason for monitoring mic placement is that you are using a boom mic. If the boom operator has the mic up to high or to low or if he even tips the mic into a different direction you are going to hear the sound change and the head phones but you would not see it happen on the meters.
When using headphones of course you are going to be listening what you are capturing. But also listen to the sound. Take a couple of moments and just listen to what is not there and you maybe surprise on what you capture. Try to break the habit of watching just the meters in your camera. Use head phone to prevent clipping, popping, mumble and distortion. Be cautious of high volume levels. Headphones allow you to catch bad audio connections, dead batteries, clothing and wind noises you might otherwise miss. Headphones can find the perfect microphone placement. During editing head phones will eliminate all the background collateral on location.
Another pitch to consider when you are doing your research is the length of the cable. For instance this one is very,0 very short which does not give me much tender between my camera and my self if I need to move around, but this one however is very long, really, r
