Allison: In keeping with the idea of covering everything, I decided to cover and old
favorite, the good old coat hanger. But instead of doing it with yarn the way
granny used to, I decided to do it with some rug fabric which is a lot of fun.
Now what you're going to use for this is basically any fabric, this is some quilting
fabric that I have left over. But anything will do as long as it tears, because you
don’t want to cuff them all.
So basically you're just going to make a quick snip. And you're going to tear it all
the way to the ends. Just like so. But don’t go all the way, just going to leave it a
little bit from the salvage. Turn around and then you're going to tear back the
other way.
Now you can make these tears as thick or as thin as you like. If you make them
thick, it’s just like having thick yarn. If you make them thin, it’s like having thin
yarn and you’ll use a small hook.
Now once you’ve done that, you're going to start making your foundation chain as
long as your coat hanger. So just measure it, easy as that. And then work in single
crochet for about 5 rows. So you just go straight in, wrap it around, pull your yarn
over and through. Easy as that. And then you just going to keep working like that
for 5 rows.
Michelle: Allison, was it hard working with that fabric?
Allison: Not at all actually, I find it really easy. As long as you use quite a large hook,
you’ll be fine. It’s just a matter of matching your hooks to the thickness of your
rug yarn.
Michelle: Okay.
Allison: So basically, once you’ve worked the 5 rows, you're going to wrap it around your
coat hanger. And then what I've done here, instead of stitching it up with yarn or
cotton or anything like that. I've just taken Stephan ribbon, just a fancy ribbon and
I've just use it, thread it through a tapestry needle and just stitch going over and
over and through all the way to the end 'til it’s done.
