Violin Lessons - How to Hold the Violin Bow

Welcome to violintutorpro.com. Today we’re going to learn a very important concept when it comes to playing the violin. And that is the bow grip. This is one of a little bit tricky at first when you’re starting out. It’s very important to do this right. And I’m going to show you how to do that. Four key elements with bow grip. You’re going to have where to put your thumb. Your thumb’s going to go right into this a little groove right here. It’s very important to keep that thumb curved like this and not what’s called Banana thumb. That’s kind of a first most important point with the bow.

Second most important point is having the pinky at the very bottom of the bow which is the button. So you want to rest that right about there. These fingers you want to spread apart, just about how spread apart I am right now, you don’t want to be too far apart or too close together just feel relaxed. And then the final thing too is how straight your fingers are. You don’t want to be like this. You want to be more kind of relaxed on angle just like that. And to demonstrate how the kind of start off by doing this, what you’re going to do is relax your hands just like this. So you’re not even flexing any muscles in your hand.
And then when you put the bow into your hand, you should barely even move your muscles at all.

So a lot of people, what they want to do is they want to grab the bow instead of resting their hand on the bow. You’re not grabbing it you’re just relaxed and relaxed as can be. And just put that bow right into there. And you want to make sure that thumb is curved, your pinky is at the button. My fingers are nice and spread apart just like that.
