Visit Hochosterwitz Castle, Austria Hochosterwitz Castle sets dramatically at the apex of a massive limestone rock in the province of Carinthia. A cable car will transport you to the main castle crowning the mountain top. Hochosterwitz is unique because it was built in the 16th century at an elevation of 150 feet. Some 700 soldiers stayed here in the castle to defend the area and women and children often came here for protection in times of war. Several of the rooms are dedicated to relying details of the castle’s war ravaged history including armory displays and antiques. Spectacular views of the surrounding valley emphasize how valuable this fortress must have been to Austria for strategic purposes throughout the centuries.
