Lalibela's Amazing Rock Cut Churches in North Ethiopia
Sheila: This churches and this is Sigei. He’s going to be our guide here. We’ve got scaffolding around the first church here. I believe it’s Bet Emmanuel. He is a priest in just this one church?
Sigei: Any wish there are at least one special priest.
Sheila: One special priest. It’s interesting about the churches here in Lalibela is that they were all constructed from the top down out of a single piece of rock, really very solid rock.
If you want to be in a hurdle what you do is you come here, they tie a rope around you and lower you into the water? Into the water and hopefully then you will become pregnant. Which church is this one?
Sigei: This one is Bet Imasca, the vows of cross.
Sheila: The churches are all primarily the same age?
Sigei: Yes.
Sheila: Thirteenth century or?
Sigei: Middle and twentieth century.
Sheila: It’s a good idea to wear these kiddies because you have to take your shoes off inside every single one of the churches. Which church is that one?
Sigei: Golgotha, so this is one.
Sheila: Golgotha.
Sigei: This worship two has private worshipping into the churches.
Sheila: And what is this one called?
Sigei: It’s Bet Marian’s or St. Marian’s.
Sheila: Bet Marian, St. Marian.
Sigei: And these two floors.
Sheila: Two floors. You have to be really careful because it is so slippery and uneven. Everybody’s been helped by their excellent guides.
Sigei: Bet Imasca and Golgotha.
Sheila: Silly me, I thought these were windows but no they are small graves. What’s that in the roof? Were they built at the same time?
Sigei: At the same time, all the church here.
Sheila: Okay, women are not allowed.
Sigei: Yeah.
Sheila: Alright I’m not allowed in, so I’m going to give it to Steve and let him take photos.
Steve: Well what you could see in here, women are not allowed. This is neat so I’m doing it.
