This smiley building in Durango Colorado may look like another historic site but this newly renovated building is a center for arts, education and creativity. The building is home to non-profit organizations, Montessori school and a number of artist who offer services and classes such as yoga, dance, drawing and pottery.
Female 1: We got all kinds, we got yoga studio’s and art studio’s, graphic art’s, dance, lots and lots of dance school here that just offers just about every kind of dance you can imagine. Its just nice to be with other artists, to talk with them and somebody next door teaches digital photography and there’s a lot of things going on here.
The smiley building was constructed in 1936 and purchased by its current owners in 1997. Since then the building has undergone a green transformation and is now a celebrated example of energy efficiency and solar power.
Female 1: The idea of the studio is that it’s a community studio, so that once we can get it self sustaining, which I think will d this year. Hopefully everybody is meant to come down so that it becomes very affordable and anybody who wants to do pottery can have a place to do it. its just the place and if you ask anybody in Durango, you know where should I go to find yoga, to find artist to find studio space, the smiley building. There is no other building like it.
