Those who enjoy pleasure gardens should visit the St. George Village botanical gardens. It’s located east of the town of Frederiksted.
The St. George Village Botanical Garden showcases over 1500 tropical plants. Between 100 and 900 AD these grounds where in area lot Indian Village between the 1700 and 1900 it was Danish sugar plantation and then a cabin ranch and finally the Botanical Gardens in 1972.
This is a 16 acres garden with well labels species of exotic tropical plants, flowers and threes. They're all planted in lovely settings around the crumbling stone ruins of a 19th century sugar plantation. There are cactus garden and herbal displays with cards that give names and some descriptions of the species.
The gardens can be quite unusual and offer as flash of brilliant color all times of the year. The ruins of the village are also interesting including a black smidge shop and the foundations of a watermill. The gardens are a refreshing and peaceful rest fit.
Whim plantation is a monument to St. Croix age of prosperity that took place from the second half of the 18th century. Drives southwest of Frederiksted or join a tour that includes whim on their itinerary. At one time the land was divided into over 300 states.
Up until the mid 1800 Danish planter is extracted sugar from every arable square inch of land on St. Croix. Ruins of many those sugar mills can still be seen today including this at the Whim Plantation.
A large stone wind mill and a mule mill have been restored and mid 19th centuries Scottish team engines for crushing and distilling can be seen. Aspects of life in the 18th and 19th centuries have been recreated with various exhibits and some demonstrations. There are reminiscing from an era when plantation owners were wealthy and head a lifestyle like that or reach Europeans. The sugar mill and great house are some of the most characteristic sites on the island.
