It’s officially a two-week long festival culminating in a massive and colorful four mile long parade along Lakeshore Boulevard. Caribana is based on the Latin style 150-year old carnival of Trinidad and Tobago, and it’s now seen a street theater on a grand scale. The most recognizable manifestation of carnival is the creation of costumes that have strong historical and mythological origins. The themes of the costumes and the parade are wide ranging, and have expanded to incorporate the Canadian identity. Parks and boulevards are filled with vendors with plenty of Caribbean treats. The atmosphere is purely festive as the audience awaits the awarding of the best individual costume or band.
