Visit the Matterhorn Mountain, Switzerland
The majestic Matterhorn is the most photograph mountain in the world. In Zermatt visitors can be board one of the areas eight gondola lifts or 11 cable cars and make their way to the top. Because it’s surrounded by glaciers and resides at a peak of 4,478 meters, snow is guaranteed all year around making it the highest summer ski resort in the Alps.
First, climbed in 1865, the Matterhorn today attracts enthusiast that ski, snowboards, sled and hike with some 394 kilometers of peaks offering a wide variety of challenges and scenery.
This dramatic mountain escape that lies between the boarders of Switzerland and Italy can be viewed from the top of the world.
By the time you’ve taken the cable car and climb up to the top of the small Matterhorn. You’ll be standing on the highest ski station in all of Europe. From this position almost in the heavens, it seems you can see clear to the other side of the world. However, some 38, 4,000 meter peaks will grab your attention in the meantime or possibly the side of multitudes of skier setting off on numerous trails.
At 3,810 meters is the glacier grotto, the highest ice grotto in the world. Softly lid in sporting a walkway that prevents slipping, the grotto is filled with various ice sculptures and information about glaciers, geology and climbing. It’s skillfully engineered to maintain a temperature that’s ideal for the preservation of the contents while keeping visitors comfortable.
There are a few cable car platforms between Zermatt and the top of the Matterhorn and each offers different views of the enigmatic mountain and its equally impressive neighbors.
The lower altitudes are much warmer and invite strolling relaxing and outdoor dining. It’s a great spot for picnics and for soaking up the sun while basking in crisp clean mountain air and trekking some of the 400 kilometers of hiking trails in the area. One last cable car stretch and you’re back down in Zermatt where the unique silhouette of the Matterhorn is always on the horizon.
