Seth Hancock: So this is Tracey Martin right here as you guys saw in the beginning of the show, Tracey actually sent us an email that said, “Hey you guys Doing Indy you need to get down here and check all that’s going on at Riolo Dance.”
And so Tracey I have to ask you first of all, why did you send us an email?
Tracey Martin: Well, because it’s a really great place and I think that a whole lot more people need to know about it. There’s a lot of people living downtown that maybe they don’t have anything to do and they can come over and learn to dance and have fun dancing and it’s a great environment.
Seth Hancock: This is Joe and Jennifer they’re part of the Elegansio Dance Company. They come here to Riolo Dance just to dance really right?
Joe: Yeah.
Jennifer: Besides being the best floor and the best atmosphere, the people here are really great too and it’s a good friendly atmosphere, lots of people who are nice. I don’t ever feel forced about anything. I love teaching here I love practicing here. Actually, I drive half an hour here everyday it’s worth it.
Seth Hancock: Are you guys seeing—is there a bigger movement now amongst younger people, the youth if you will to start dancing and learning things like ballroom and tango and salsa?
Jennifer: Oh definitely.
Joe: Yeah.
Seth Hancock: Really?
Joe: Like I can go almost anywhere even outside of the city and when you say, you salsa you have an instant friendships when people find out you salsa. It’s awesome.
Some people that I met here are just amazing. I mean they come from all different backgrounds. It doesn’t matter what you do it’s just when you go and dance its all you want to do is just dance.
Seth Hancock: I look forward to see you guys do some dancing.
So this is Marie Roach, she’s the owner of Riolo Dance here and Marie, first of all I'm so glad that we came out here because this really is a beautiful space. I mean you’re right downtown you got this windows that overlook right here just right downtown. It’s gorgeous it’s a great floor. First of all thank you for letting us come out here, we really appreciate it.
Marie Roach: We’re glad to have you here.
Seth Hancock: So tell us about how Riolo started and why Indianapolis?
Marie Roach: Well’ I’ve been teaching ballroom dancing in Indianapolis since about 1988, and I have always wanted to have my own place.
Seth Hancock: What I like is your philosophy of Riolo Dance that you don’t find with a lot of places like you could go to those other dance studios which we won’t mention and if you go there they make you pay a contract whereas here you can just come and dance.
Marie Roach: That’s right. We have group lessons which are affordable $10.00 a person for an hour lesson. Some people just do groups, some people takes private. Our private lessons you can take once a week, you can take two a week, you can take once a month.
Seth Hancock: Or you can stop by and just dance if you want to. So what is it about dance that is so universal because you’ve got people here, you got you know senior citizens, you got young adults, you got Black, you got White and it really speaks to a lot of different people doesn’t it?
Marie Roach: It does and that’s one of the reasons too that I wanted to open a place is to integrate all the different dance groups here in Indianapolis. We have west coast swings, salsa, tango, ballroom and not just ballroom but just individual studios that never mix. And here at Riolo I say, I don’t care where you take your lessons or what type of dance you like. If you come to one of our events you're going to be greeted by friendly faces and have a good time.
Seth Hancock: What’s interesting about tonight is that you have a woman all the way from Argentina who’s going to be teaching argentine tango.
Marie Roach: Yes, we have Alicia Pons. And I actually just got back from Argentina and I study with her there but we brought her back tot eh United States to teach and we have people for our workshop—weekend workshops and Milonga, which is an Argentine tango dance tomorrow evening.
Seth Hancock: I had that once.
Marie Roach: Milonga?
Seth Hancock: Yeah, I had to take a couple of shots for it. And I love this people are already dancing behind us. They’re getting ready they’re getting excited. This is such a great place, can you teach me how to dance like—because I mean like do you teach modern dances like the hitchhiker? Or how about the sprinkler?
Marie Roach: The sprinkler?
Seth Hancock: Do you teach that here?
Marie Roach: I don’t, but I try to find somebody that could teach you that.
Seth Hancock: Tracey thank you so much for inviting us out here, I’m really pleasantly surprised at how great Riola Dance is and the fact that we got something this cultural right here in Indianapolis. It’s really a cool place and I think that everybody should go out and see.
So for doing Indy, I’m your host Seth Hancock, and remember in Indianapolis it’s always easy to do so much.
Tracey: You just got to get out there and do something.
Seth Hancock: See you guys next week.
