John: Hello, welcome to Trip On A Deal, I’m John
Luz: And I’m Luz. Today, we showcase the new editions to the World Heritage list. It’s put up by UNESCO, The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization. A list of cultural and natural sites that they believe to be irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.
John: Places like East Africa’s Serengeti and the Pyramids of Egypt, and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. And recently 13 new sites have been added to the list and they are worth the look. Check them out. It’s 18 gorgeous mountains with sheer cliffs and narrow deep valleys, steeples and pinnacles that will leave you breathless.
Luz: We’re talking about The Dolomites, a section of the Italian Alps for adventure seekers; this is the place for skiing in winter, mountain climbing in summer and even paragliding and base jumping.
John: Would you ever base jump?
Luz: No!
John: Okay.
Luz: I want to live.
John: Well try a biking tour, you can live through that.BikeToursDirect.com is offering 7 hotel nights plus luggage transport as you put your thighs to the depths. For more information about the area, go to Dolomiti.org.
Luz: Then there’s the one sea, the world heritage has singled up the arrow that stretches from Germany to The Netherlands, a coastal wetland of mussel beds, salt marshes, beaches and dunes with grey seals and harbor poultices and a breeding ground for almost 12 million birds a year.
John: So where at? Some of the islands in the area have been seaside resorts since the 1800. A popular place for boating and something called Mud Hiking which is basically walking on the sandy plots at low tide.
Luz: Oh I've done that.
John: Have you? Walk in mud?
Luz: Just at low tide.
John: Okay, well just don’t do it on your own though, we have to use a licensed guide because you can actually get caught by a fast, incoming tide and people actually get in trouble there.
Luz: Not a good vacation
John: No
Luz: One good site for tours, Wadlopen.net; usually last 3 to 4 hours and typically around 30 bucks. Also new to the list, the first European Colonial outpost in the tropics. Cidale Velha, a small town in the southern part of the island of Santiago, which is off the coast in West Africa. Some of the original 18th Century structures are still there.
John: This is a tough destination to get you for Americans but we’ve seen week long trips from Italy for as low as 400 Euro. And in China there’s a sacred Buddhist mountain, Mount Wutai, where temples have been built since the 1st Century A.D. Now 53 monasteries, that landscape and temples with amazing sculptures and displays.
Luz: There is some bit of controversy here according to the London Guardian, local authorities want the inheritance list so badly; they ousted some surrounding residents in order to turn the area into a more pristine spot.
John: Well depending on what you think about that, if you want to go see it, from Beijing you can get a side tour from a tour company called ITourBeijing.com. Transportation at the temple and a night at a local 4 star hotel for a hundred seventy bucks.
Luz: There are also new sites in the list this year in Switzerland, the U.K., Spain, Belgium, Korea, Iran and Peru.
