The mystique, the intrigue, the dynasty—it’s a trip back in time. Way back, 13 century back. Ancient Maya civilization doesn’t get more fascinating than this—in the foothills of western Hondurans, the Ruins of Copan.
The acropolis, the plazas, the temples and the tombs tell the tale of a flourishing city of kings and gods.
Ricardo Agurcia: The Maya in putting the sculpture on the external of the sides of these buildings did it for specific purposes. And they created these beautiful scenes that in many ways are almost poetic.
Copan is the Maya’s crowning artistic achievement which stunningly ornate sculptures.

The hieroglyphic stairway confirms the city’s history with the longest known text in the new world. Near the stairway in the Great Plaza a ball cord, where markers resemble Macaw heads.

Copan was mysteriously abandoned shortly after the year 800. But the remarkable ruins still demonstrate the didi’s mighty influence over its people. And today, archeologist continues to excavate the city.
