Vitamin and Mineral Supplements

Paul: Hi, my name is Paul from Toronto and I would like to know vitamin supplements are good replacement for vegetables?

Bonnie Jortberg: Paul, this is very hot topic since vitamin and mineral supplements are actually a multi-billion dollar industry in this country and what we do know is that eating high amounts of fruits and vegetables somewhere between five to eight servings per day seem to be protective against certain types of cancer, may even help with protecting heart disease some of those kinds of things. Unfortunately, the studies that have been done looking at actually supplementing someone's diet with vitamins and minerals doesn't seem to have the same effect. So, there are really are not any recommendations for taking any types of vitamin and mineral supplements for most people. So what you would like, what really is recommended is that you make sure you are getting your five to eight servings of fruits and vegetables everyday and forego the vitamin and mineral supplement.
