One of the surprises for the show this year was the Volkswagen Concept Blue Sport. Very little of the information was leaked before the event and actually very little was leaked at the press conference, very little is being said about this car yet. What we do know is that it's their way, their concept of bringing efficient dynamics or whatever to the sports car realm.
So this one is powered by 2.0-litre TDI, clean diesel, mid-mounted, so you have 45 -55 weight distribution, front to rear, 177 hp, 225 pound-feet of torque and 43 miles per gallon, so that small tank still gives you like 700 mile range, which will be very nice.
You've got the front end that definitely has current Volkswagen styling cues but a lot of the rest of the vehicle has a sort of an Audi, look and feel to it and there is some speculation that an Audi R4 mid engined sports car needs a little more production volume for the underpinnings and this is the possible study to see about the way of getting that production volume between Volkswagen and Audi. So there might be something to that. It is good looking; Walter De'Silva was the head designer on it and quite like his stuff likely to A5/S5 for example. A lot of real arch design here, quite likely the orange top and the silver bodied work. The interior is very simple but elegant. The car is also very light weight, 2650 pounds, a lot of weight saving techniques throughout the car, including I guess the soft top mechanism weighs only 60 pounds. So production possibilities, anybody's guess, I guess you would have to sort of pin your hopes on the R4 along with this one and we haven't seen that car yet so here is hoping. I'd like to see this on the road.
