Rebecca: Pauline Randolph Hearst historically has been one widely charge with finding the flames of the Spanish American War, do you too desire to sell news papers. Hi I’m Rebecca Britton and welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’ll be considering why there’s maybe a misconception.
Kenneth: Generally it’s believed that Hearst went America to fight Spain over Cuba because they wanted to sell newspapers. He just had no higher purpose in running up the circulation making more money. that’s the story as it’s told, what was going on at the time the Spain was in a possession of Cuba and Spain had money problems. So it was squeezing it’s colony in Cuba for all that was worth and trying to get more money out of sugar cane, everything else that was going on there, Cuban people rebelled against Spain.
They didn’t want to be squeezed. First looked at this and said, you know America was born in a revolution against the British Empire when the British Empire starts squeezing the colonies in The US, and we simplifies philosophically, politically with the Cuban people. So he was supporting them from the start. Spain starts losing its fight to put down the rebellion in Cuba and starts resulting to harsher and the hasher measures to trying to put it down including rounding up all the civilians in the countryside putting them in effectively in the concentration camps from 400,000 people on an island of 1.6 million. And they begin dying by the ten and thousands and eventually the hundreds of thousands of deceased starvation is really outrage to Hearst and he wanted America to step in and do something.
Hearst just kept beating the drum beating the drum on behalf of the Cuban people and eventually Washington did step in diplomatically and when Spain wouldn’t move to step in militarily and cleared Spain out of Cuban. And I think one of the most heroic things in the newspaper ever done was to encourage the government to step in on behalf of the poor Cuban people who were just devastated by the effects for this rebellion and Spain suffered to put it down.
Rebecca: And what about that in from this code I know most people have heard.
Kenneth: Yes, well Hearst during the Spanish American War sent Frederick Remington the illustrator to Cuba to do some work. Remington writes to Hearst at some point reported while some saying there’s nothing going on here, I want to come home and Hearst just alleged to say that you furnish the pitcher and I’ll furnish the war. Nobody has ever found this telegram. We’re not sure it ever existed and if it did exist, it probably didn’t mean what people have taken it to me and that Hearst thought he could just wipe up the war in six weeks. Hearst was a lot traitor in that particular time he is alleged to present it. They were a long ways Washington from intervening. A lot has been made out of it because people have the sort of outsized picture of Hearst is this big centerfold monster with amazing influence and power who could do something so outrages just start a war in order to fit his illustrators times schedule but it’s part of alleged in the person part of why we’re fascinated by him but it didn’t really happened.
