Speaker: Waist circumference.
Dr. Lee: The waist circumference is a very good measure and a simple way of finding out whether one is overweight.
Speaker: Obesity clearly has a negative impact on health, but it’s also important how this excess weight is carried. Body fat distribution maybe assessed by measuring the waist circumference. Men should be measured at their navel and women should be measured midway between the bottom of their ribs and the top of their hip bones. Waist circumference values exceeding 102 centimeters or 40 inches in men and 88 centimeters or 35 inches in women are associated with increased health risks.
Dr. Lee: If your measurements are greater than those for your sex it may suggest that you are at risk for developing insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and potentially, in the future, diabetes.
