This week we’re celebrating Washington’s Birthday. We have Lincoln’s birthday last week, Valentines Day over the weekend and now we’re looking at Washington. And so I decided that Washington’s puzzle would be the block for the week and this includes some half rectangle triangle, as well as squares and other very weird shapes. But I think it’s going to be pretty easy to sew.
This is Penny Halgren from Quiltblocklibrary.com, and I’m ready to get started sewing this block together. So let’s go to the sewing machine.
I don’t know about you but when I think of George Washington, I think of a cherry tree and that he chopped it down when he was a little kid or at least that was the story. So I decided to make this block red for cherries and green for like the tree. However, I can only find strawberry fabric, so that’s what we’re using.
So this is officially a nine-patch and it’s kind of off center. So the challenge here is going to be to sew this up so that it all comes up square. And I am going to change stitch this and so I’m going to sew this two roses together first. And just fold over the patterns or the piece right sides together and then just change how it goes.
Now that this two patters some together and each one of the rose, I’m just going to sew the third row on column however you put it. But I’m going to change so this together to and you’ll notice that this are still attach. Now we’ve got the patches in each of the rose sewn together and so we just need to sew the block together. And the first step is just a fold the top roan down onto the bottom and sew this together.
Now by keeping the stitching attach the rose attach to each other it’s easy to line them up and make sure that they’re in the place that they need to be to sew them together. Now the top two rose are sewn together, so we’re just going to fold up the bottom roan and sew it together. This was really an easy block and as you sew this together, you’ll realize that all of this seams all of the internals seams on the block are straight crane and cross-pairing to the fabric. What’s going to be difficult here is going to be sewing the blocks together because this are now all by it seams. And so one of the things that you can do is once the block is all sewing together is just run a line of stitching around the outside that’s straight stitching and that will help prevent the edges from stretching as you sew the blocks together.
This Washington’s square quilt block is all finish. If you taught the hard pattern was easy, this one is even easier. They’re only nine pieces. They’re all straight edges. They’re pretty big and it goes together quick. So happy birthday George Washington, have fun with this block and thank you very much for joining me.
