One secret to achieving a lush and healthy lawn is thorough proper watering. This encourages deep, drought-resistant roots. Most lawns, plants, and shrubs need about one inch of water every seven to ten days to remain healthy. And the best time to water is early in the morning, it’s cool. Therefore, little evaporation occurs. And usually there’s less wind. So, all the water gets to the lawn. Take care not to let your lawn dry out.
If a lawn dries out, the foliage wilts and the blades of grass with curl or fold. When this happens, there’ll be a subtle color change from rich green to a dull blue green. Another thing you’ll notice is a loss of bounce. Walk across the lawn in the morning, if your footprints remain for more than a few seconds, it’s time for watering.
I guess you’re wondering how much water you’ll need. Well. a good rule of thumb is to water one inch of water per application. It’s also best to water all at one time rather than breaking it up into two applications. This will allow the water to soak in below the root zone.
A good way to determine one inch of water is to place a small shallow pan in the path of your lawn sprinkler. Monitor the time it takes to fill the pan to about one inch depth. Use this as a guide per each sprinkler in your yard. The Home Depot offers some great new irrigation options that will help save water, time, and money. Another tip is if you happen to have ornamental plants, it’s good to mulch them. This benefits you in two ways. It helps to prevent weeds and it will help hold moisture in the soil which prevents evaporation from the soil surface. For best result, you want to add three to five inches of mulch.
