Born January 26, 1961, Wayne Gretzky is one of the greatest hockey players of all time. There’s no denying that. He was a classic prodigy at age six, he was skiing with 10-year olds, at age 10 in 85 games, he scored 378 goals which is completely ridiculous. At age 14, he was playing the 20-year old and eventually he signed with the WHAm, The World Hockey Association as an underage player because this signings were not allowed in the NHL at the time.
After the WHA folded in 1979, four of the teams went on to the NHL. One of these teams was Edmonton Oilers and they brought with them Wayne Gretzky. Wayne Gretzky at first, no one thought that he would be able to burn his dominant game into the NHL. They said that the game was too big and too fast from there. However, his first year, he won the MVP trophy, his first of eight consecutive. Wayne Gretzky held her shared 61 NHL records upon his retirement in April of 1999. He had 40 regular season records, 15 play off records and six all star records. Some of the most impressive regular season records include most goals in the season at 92, most of the season at 163 and most points in this season at 250. No one else was even able to break the 200 mark.
On August 9th 1988 and a move that drastically changed the NHL, Gretzky was traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the Lost Angeles Kings. Canadians were so mad at this that one politician actually tried the government to bluff the trade. Gretzky himself was considered a traitor by many Canadians because he turns his back from his adopted hometown, his home province and his home country. Some people said the motivation behind the trade was to further his wife’s acting career. Many credit Gretzky for putting non traditional US Hockey Marty on the NHL map. Also in 1990, the associate of press named Wayne Gretzky, the greatest athlete of the decade.
For being a hockey player who brought just about every possible record in the NHL, this is why we decided putting up on this list. He was slow, small and skinny but he became the idol of entire nation.
