Weight Fluctuation and Hormones

Jonathan: My name is Jonathan from Wakefield, Massachusetts and hear that gaining and loosing a lot weight can affect your hormones, is that true and if so how? Lisa Bernstein: Jonathan, actually weight loss or weight gain in the extreme can affect hormones. Women for instance who are marathon runners and may have low levels of body mass or body weight especially can actually have changes in their periods so that they have fewer periods than they normally would. Men who eat meals with low in fat may actually have low testosterone levels which can decrease the risk of prostate cancer. We have also found that women who are postmenopausal who gain a lot of weight in that time period can actually be at higher risk for breast cancer, where as those who lose weight postmenopausal may have a lower risk for breast cancer. So the best thing to do is to try to eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy life style and hopefully everything will mean just imbalance.
