Weight Gain During Pregnancy

Weight Gain During Pregnancy Jhona: I’m 22 weeks pregnant with my first child and I’m starting to show now. It freaks me up to think about my size. I really like to know what takes effect, Dr. Lisa, how big should I get during my pregnancy? Lisa: We asked Jhona to be here today to answer this question because it is so important. Jhona’s right here and she it looks absolutely lovely. How many weeks are you? Jhona: I’m about 22. Lisa: 22 so almost about five months pregnant give or take. Jhona: Yeah. Lisa: And you look fabulous, you’re feeling okay? Jhona: Yeah I feel great. Lisa: Great, well your question’s really important. Basically it depends on how much you weigh when you start your pregnancy. On average is about 25 to 35 pounds but if you’re a little overweight going into the pregnancy you may gain a little bit less. If you’re a little underweight, you may gain a little bit more and you look very, very tiny. How much have you gained? Jhona: About 15 already, 15 pounds. Lisa: Okay, so that sounds just about perfect, are you feeling pretty good? Jhona: Yeah, I feel good. I just want to know where’s it all going to go? Lisa: Trust me, it finds places. Jhona: Okay. Lisa: And the thing of it is if you’re tiny, you’re just going to you know a lot of people will say; well, you don’t look like you’ve gained a lot of weight. It depends on what your body structure is as well. But the problem is if you’re gaining too much weight in pregnancy it can cause a lot of pregnancy complications and I know because believe it or not, I weighed 200 pounds when I delivered my son. To be gaining too much weight it can cause all kinds of problems from pre-eclampsia or hypertension in pregnancy to what we call macrosomia where the baby gets really big and so you have high risk of C-section and there can also be there’s been a new UCLA research where they found that expectant mothers, their kids at age nine they can actually have a high risk for blood pressure. They have lower amounts of the good cholesterol. They have poor immune function and they have weight problems. So you have to watch your weight and your doctor will watch that with you because sometimes at the beginning of pregnancy you may be nauseous, you may not gain as much and then some may come more at the end and so we watch the overall trend is what’s really important and what’s going on with baby’s growth as well.
