Host: Ready to take the everwell challenge? We post tough questions to shoppers to separate truth from friction regarding a topic most of us think we know a lot about, weight loss. Okay, the first question is, when trying to drop pounds, what is the most important thing to watch? Is it?
(a) Calories.
(b) Carbohydrates, or
(c) Fat.
Speaker 1: Calories.
Speaker 2: Fat.
Speaker 3: For losing weight, calories.
Host: That was easy, it's calories.
Page Love: What's the most important to count when you're trying to lose weight or being aware of when you're trying to lose weight is the energy balance, so calories in versus calories out is very important.
Host: Of course if you're counting calories, you need to know which foods pack the greatest caloric punch. See if you can guess. Which of these items has the most calories?
(a) A large soda.
(b) An omelet.
(c) A candy bar, or
(d) A bakery bran muffin.
Speaker 4: I should say a large soda.
Speaker 2: Well, if it's chocolate, maybe the muffin.
Speaker 5: A candy.
Speaker 6: I am going to go with an omelet.
Host: It's the muffin, surprised?
Page Love: Unfortunately the way things come supersized in our society, when you got and you buy a nice fresh bakery, even a bran muffin, you are actually going to end up getting more calories in something like this. I would say a good portion for something like this would be half of this muffin and then complement it with a diary product and a fruit to get in the balance of what we need in a meal.
Host: So it's really about total calories, but what about low fat foods? True or false, they can at least help in the battle of the bulge, can they?
Speaker 6: False.
Speaker 5: False.
Speaker 7: I say true because it's lower in fat.
Speaker 1: I'd say false but,
Speaker 7: Why"
Speaker 1: It's because people typically tend to eat more low fat foods.
Host: That's the right idea, it's false.
Page Love: A lot of these sugar-free fat free foods really are not effective in weight loss or weight management in the long run. People end up going for the next food because these foods are not satisfying.
Host: Onto the next question, portion size, it's a significant issue at dinner time. When it comes to protein, how many ounces do you need at a single serving?
Speaker 3: Two, three.
Speaker 8: I don't know much about ounces, but I will say like a fist.
Page Love: We actually only need an average portion of about 3-4 ounces at a typical meal, like the palm of a woman's hand, here is a chicken breast, so about a three ounce portion. Unfortunately, the average person is getting something more like this piece of stack which is about a six ounce piece of meat. They make so much harder for a person to lose weight when they have more protein and more fat than their body needs in a typical day.
Host: Our question is, according to Federal guidelines, how much exercise should you be getting each day in order to lose weight and keep it off?
Speaker 2: 30 minutes, 3 times a week.
Speaker 8: 30 minutes of exercise every day.
Host: That's what you need for general fitness according to many experts but to keep weight off we need.
Page Love: 60-90 minutes a day. It's a lot more than most of us want to hear but what I really try to emphasis is the total amount of activity in the day and so just becoming more active throughout your day, trying to park a little bit further away from your office or from the grocery store, trying to take your stairs more often. Your total amount of activity of these various little bouts of activities should be equaling that 60-90 minutes.
Host: Is there a magic bullet to losing weight and keeping it off? Most experts say, not really, but a lifetime of balanced eating and daily physical exercise can help you stay healthy and add your ideal weight.
Speaker 9: Oh, good.
Speaker 1: Yeah, lifting kids around to you always helps.
