Male: You run a very successful weight loss program called “Wait No More”, is it a business or is it more?
Female: It is a business but it is a lot more than that everybody here, with my mother was the founder of the business and we do this from the heart. We are passionate about what we do. My mother is a success of her own program, I am a success of the own program weighing almost 60 pounds more than I do right now seven years ago. So, we do it from the heart because we understand that we have the power in changing people’s lives, the way they look, the way they feel about themselves, their attitude towards others and it is a great thing.
Male: So in other words, you take people who have a problem, you get them to fix the problem to some degree and more important, you keep them from going back.
Female: Of course and we have the phone bills to prove it. I keep all the records of all my phone calls all over these years. I have big manuals in my office in Oakers. When the client gets the bill and maintenance, when they are finished with us and they got their stabilization, we never let them out of our sight.
Every few months, we are calling them to make sure that they are running straight and narrow to maybe if they put on a pound or two, we just tell them what to do right over the phone and we never let anybody go for too long.
Male: So in other words, good follow up leads a good maintenance?
Female: Absolutely.
Male: And you also had an expression that I want and I talked to you once before about this, you can fail some case.
Female: Sure.
Male: But the trick is you pick up the pieces and move on.
Female: Sure, that is exactly right. Sometimes we try to teach people that it is better not to fail at the spur of the moment, it is better to plan to fail. Meaning, if you are doing well and you go to a party and you see a piece of cheesecake there and you eat it without thinking, you are always going to feel guilty about it. It is not that going to really taste good to you, in5 minutes after you swallow it, you are going to feel awful about what you just did.
Versus what we try to tell people. When somebody says to me, “Laurie, I am going to a birthday party in two weeks”. I say to them. “If that is the time that you know you really want to let lose a little bit, let us be grade up until then”. And then Saturday night, you get the slice of pie, you get a slice of pizza, whatever it is that, that indulgences, because when you plan to cheat it taste better. There is no guilt associated with it and then the next morning you get up and you are right back on program.
Male: As long as you agree that you are going to get back on the right method.
Female: Right, that is exactly right.
Male: That is the secret.
Female: That is exactly right. Nobody goes, and if somebody who has loose 50 pounds is not going to loose 50 pounds from 0 to 50 without gaining 5, 6 or 7 pounds up and down along the way. We do not expect it. It is not possible.
Male: I would tell to my patients that every one of my pencils has erasers. It is going to stay that way. A human being, they have to make many mistakes.
Female: Sure, that is okay.
Male: There is nothing wrong with that.
Female: I do not think there is anything wrong with that.
Male: As long as you admit it is a mistake and say look, I will compensate and I will move on.
Female: I will tell you something else. Sometime when the client comes to me, especially they have been doing well, they went on vacation and for the first time in many, many months of eating right it really let lose and they said, “the hell with it. I will just get back on track when I get back to the office” and they always tell me how really crappy they feel. Their body was not used to all the fried food that they had and all the sugar and I say to them, “Do not be upset with yourself. It is a good thing.” Because if you remember now how really awful you felt that sometimes from going to the bathroom regularly and from drinking so much water and being hydrated.
If they are on vacation, they are sitting in the beach, they are drinking alcohol instead of water, you are going to buffet instead of managing what you are eating, I say, “Listen that is a good thing.”
You have been eating well for so long, you saw how your body reacted to it, now you went away from one week of pure indulgence, you do not like the way you feel? That is a good thing. Now you have learned another lesson, have you not?
Male: In other words you pick up in a mistake.
Female: Right.
Male: But it is a learning is experience so it sound like a little education.
Female: Absolutely, absolutely.
Male: So, this success that you have is just keep going on.
Female: Just keep going on. Nobody breaks a bad habit. I do not care what it is smoking, drinking, drugs whatever it is. Nobody gets there by saying, “I am never smoking again.” And stop. Very few people can do that. Very few people can do that. Very few people can say I am never, ever, ever again going to shoot myself with heroin and become clean and so good the next day. There is always a few pit falls and that is fine. I had them when I was trying to lose them with 60 pounds.
Male: Plastic surgery sometimes help people reconstruct your face, see you had an injury and they have to form the nose. You do not see yourself looking better. Sometimes up to two years because your body keeps thinking the old image and maybe never, a 100% because there is always a little bit in the back of your mind but you get to that two year mark more likely you agree thinking that I look the new way, which is now the real way. Is that correct?
Female: I believe some to, yes, when you see the real way it reminds me—
Male: The way that other see you.
Female: No, a lot of times what we hear from clients when they are in the weight lose process, they are not all finished yet, maybe they are half way, they have a lot of weight to lose, and they will start to tell me that some of their friends or some of their family, people they have not seen in a while are saying to them you look to thin, do not lose anymore weight, even though they may be still 25 pounds or more away from where they should be. And I am trying tell my clients just say thank you very much, I appreciate the compliment. I always try to tell them, it is not that you look too thin, these people who have known being overweight all your life. If you have never gained weight in the first place, being thin now is only how they would only know you.
Do you understand what I am saying?
Male: Because they have to look at you a different one.
Female: The people around you have to accept the new you.
Male: So, in other words…
Female: Not that you are too thin.
Male: Your community looks at you the old way.
Female: That is exactly right.
Male: And that exemplifies you.
Female: And they absolutely do.
Male: The will probably say, “oh you look do not look healthy.”
Female: They will absolutely do and I always ask my clients, “Please look at those, who is saying this to you, are they are in good shape? Are they over weight themselves? Most of the time. They are hearing this, Oh you are too slim from people who are over weight because the fact that this clients of mine is doing well, says to this client that she is a failure if she cannot do it.
If something is obvious, it is human nature. You are really angry inside that this person that you know made a commitment is doing it and is looking great and inside that person is saying why can I not do. They are always as if they are waiting for their friend to fail.
Male: Like the average weight for student is 150 and whenever we catch and everybody average weight is 180, hey listen, I am now an average weight sounds like the mentality right?
Female: Right.
Male: Instead of saying the right weight is 150.
Female: But to answer your questions it is perfectly okay to have bad days, everybody does and I do not even consider that failing. I just consider that having a bad day, failing is when you have a bad day and you give up. That is failing.
